DEFINITION OF POSITION: Works under the direct supervision of the and reports to the Surgery Services Nurse Manager. This position receives and reprocesses reusable instruments throughout the hospital, performs cleaning and sterilizing duties, prepares instrument trays, sterile linens, and supplies as directed. They will distribute reprocessed supplies, assist with pulling case carts and assist with inventory control in surgery. On occasion they may be asked to assist with the transport of patients and equipment inter and intra departmentally.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
A. Personal Traits, Qualities and Aptitudes: Must be able to
1) perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure
2) recognize the rights and responsibilities of patient confidentiality
3) conveys empathy and compassion to those experiencing grief pain or trauma;
4) reports to surgery services staff any changes in patient condition;
5) relates to others in a manner that creates a sense of team work and cooperation.
6) pick, pinch or otherwise work with fingers;
7) perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and
8) stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds maximum, with frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.This position requires continuous walking and standing must be able to identify, match and distinguish colors. On occasion with assistance may lift greater than 100 pounds.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
  • Required: High school diploma or GED.
  • Desired: Formal training in Central Supply or Surgery.
Experience:
  • Desired: Previous experience in Sterile Processing and Decontamination (SPD) or surgery

Equipment/Tools/Work Aids:Equipment sterilizer, pre-vac steam sterilizer, ultrasonic cleaner, pressurized air nozzle, endoscope washer/disinfector, photo copier, telephone system, wheelchairs, stretchers and other equipment as directed.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:Trained in the efficient and effective use and care of instruments and equipment in SPD. Able to provide for patient's age-specific, cultural, physical, and psychological well-being during transport.
Other: Bilingual/English-Spanish speaking preferred. Ability to work with culturally diverse population essential.
