Position Summary:
The School Bus Mechanic/Technician is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on all district-owned vehicles, including school buses and white fleet units. This role ensures that all vehicles are safe, reliable, and compliant with state and federal transportation regulations. This position reports directly to the Transportation Service Manager and supports daily transportation operations by maintaining a high standard of excellence, customer service, mechanical service and vehicle readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance and safety inspections on school buses and other district vehicles, including oil changes, brake service, tire replacements, and fluid checks.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions using diagnostic tools and perform necessary repairs.
- Complete all vehicle repairs in accordance with federal, state, and district standards, including DOT and Tennessee Department of Education regulations.
- Maintain records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs performed on all vehicles.
- Ensure proper inventory control and documentation for parts used and requested.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment within the bus garage and surrounding areas.
- Operate and move school buses and other vehicles within the lot or between school sites as needed.
- Perform road tests to ensure proper repair and safe operation of vehicles.
- Assist in emergency roadside repair when necessary.
- Collaborate with the Fleet Service Manager and mechanics team to ensure vehicles are returned to service in a timely manner to minimize operational delays.
- Provide courteous and professional service to school bus drivers, administrators, and other district staff when addressing repair needs.
- Participate in professional development or technical training as required to stay current with industry practices and vehicle systems.
- Operate a school bus as needed for coverage, including student transportation or activity trips.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience in vehicle repair and maintenance, preferably with diesel engines, heavy-duty vehicles, or school buses.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug/alcohol screenings as required by law.
- Working knowledge of tools, equipment, and technology used in vehicle diagnostics and repair.
- Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Strong attention to detail, safety, and organization.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Certification in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), particularly in school bus or medium/heavy truck areas.
- Knowledge of diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins INSITE, Allison DOC).
- Welding and fabrication skills.
- Air brake certification.
- Previous experience in a school district or public fleet setting.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to work in various physical positions including standing, crawling, kneeling, and bending for extended periods.
- Exposure to vehicle fumes, noise, grease, and inclement weather conditions.
- Must be able to work in a garage environment with various tools and equipment.
- 260-day work calendar, typically Monday-Friday.
- Occasional overtime or evening work may be required to meet operational needs.
- Hourly rate determined by district salary schedule based on experience and certification.
