Job Summary
Instructors are responsible for teaching and supervising students in the classroom and clinical settings. Also responsible for curriculum development and student guidance. This position is a 12- month term; 37.5 hours per week faculty position. The Registered Nursing Instructor is responsible for the delivery of quality, safe registered nursing education in the clinical, skills lab, and simulation settings.
Nature of Work
Provide didactic and clinical education to nursing students in the classroom and in a variety of healthcare settings as they progress through three semesters of course work.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards. Summary of Responsibilities: • Demonstrate ability to relate and work effectively with students, peers and the public. • Commit to the mission and objectives of the Associated Degree Nursing (ADN) Program. • Meet the academic, clinical and physical demands of the program. • Assist with ADN Program administrative duties as assigned by the Director of the Associated Nursing Degree Program. • Devote the amount of time needed to become an effective classroom and clinical instructor. • Demonstrate willingness to work in a culturally diverse setting. • Provide own transportation and be punctual and regular in attendance. • Demonstrate or be willing to acquire typing and computer skills. • Communicate with the associated nursing degree program director and other nursing faculty at least weekly and as necessary. • Participate in ADN Program faculty meetings. • Attend associate degree Nursing Advisory Committee meetings as requested by the associated degree nursing program director. • Serve as a liaison to community and professional agencies. • Assist with the maintenance of essential school and student records to be used for student and program evaluation and follow-up. • Assist with student admission activities, including testing and interviewing, as requested by the program director. • Develop course outlines and lesson plans for teaching nursing courses. • Direct and supervise student learning in the classroom and clinical areas. • Evaluate and record student performance. • Participate in evaluation of student learning outcomes and completion of the student learning tracking grid each semester and report data. • Participate in counseling and guidance of students related to their course of instruction. • Maintain an environment conducive to student learning. • Assist with other administrative duties as requested by the Director of Associate Degree Nursing. • Adhere to the policies and procedures of New River Community and Technical College and the Associated Degree Nursing Program. • Instructs clinical, skills labs, and simulation courses for the associate degree nursing program based on program schedule/calendar needs. • Delivers clinical instruction according to the current course content outline and approved course syllabi. • Provides students with opportunities to acquire knowledge and practice skills identified in the course learning outcomes using varied and appropriate teaching methods. • Prepares for clinical, skills labs, or simulation by selecting appropriate learning experiences that are well organized and related to course learning outcomes. • Provides students with a variety of learning modalities including instructional technology in the clinical, skills lab and simulation settings to augment instruction. • Orients students to the facility. • Conducts weekly pre-briefing and debriefing sessions during pre- and post- clinical conferences to enrich the clinical experience. • Demonstrates knowledge of instructional and student policies and procedures as described in the current Associate Degree Nursing Student Handbook and course syllabi. • Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills. • Demonstrates respect for students as individuals. • Provides positive role modeling by maintaining a professional relationship with students and modeling professional behaviors such as accessibility, dress, communication, grooming, and regular, timely attendance. • Maintains control of the class and effectively and appropriately handles disruptions in the lab or clinical settings. • Maintains open communication with the Lead Cohort/Campus Instructor, the Director of the Associated Degree Nursing Program, and the clinical facility staff. • Evaluates students' performance weekly, at mid-term and at the end of the semester using the appropriate course evaluation tool. • Counsel's students when appropriate and documents the event using the Student Counseling Form. • Grades assignments using appropriate grading rubrics in a timely manner with constructive comments. • Documents grades in the Brightspace Learning Management System. • Communicates students' clinical and lab progress, concerns, absences, and counseling to the Lead Cohort Instructor and the Director of associate degree Nursing in a timely manner. • Maintains the student clinical skills performance record and communicates need for remediation within 24 hours to the student and the Lead Cohort/Campus instructor. • Provides a safe clinical learning environment by assigning appropriate patient care consistent with the student's academic/experience level, ensuring the student is familiar with equipment, following safety protocols of the clinical facility, providing the student with the information required to safely care for the assigned patient, and observing the student during all medication administration and invasive procedures. • Performs other related duties accompanying the position.
Professional Development • Compliance training is to be completed routinely and timely and as directed by the Director of Associate Degree Nursing. • Participate in additional professional development opportunities through professional organization affiliations. • Maintain membership in professional nursing organizations.

Skills/Abilities Required: • Registered Nurse currently licensed in West Virginia. • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical practice experience in an acute care setting • Experience teaching nursing theory and nursing skills application in the classroom and clinical area or both in a basic nursing education program • Two (2) or more years of teaching or equivalent experience is required. Preferred: • Experience teaching in Higher Education, more specifically in a community college • Experience teaching in a concept-based curriculum; • Experience teaching with advanced technology including simulation; • Experience with web-based course creation and delivery; and • Experience with curriculum development and assessment. Education • A Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) or Nursing Education (MNEd) from an accredited institution is required OR • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and be admitted and enrolled in a graduate degree program with a major in Nursing within one year of employment in the faculty position as demonstrated by submission of transcripts to the program coordinator.

In addition to the knowledge/education, the following related work experience is typically required, for this position. An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be acceptable.
Required Experience: • Registered Nurse currently licensed in West Virginia. Hold a current, active RN license or privilege to practice that is not encumbered and meets requirements of the WV BON. • Faculty supervising clinical experiences shall hold a current active RN license or privilege to practice that is not encumbered and meets requirements in the jurisdiction where the clinical practicum is conducted. • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical practice experience in an acute care setting • Experience teaching nursing theory and nursing skills application in the classroom and clinical area or both in a basic nursing education program • Two (2) or more years of teaching or equivalent experience is required.
