Under the supervision of the Assistant City Manager, the Director of Communications assists the City Manager, City Council and City Departments with public relations, media relations, marketing, public information, community relations, and crisis management. Employees also function as the Public Information Officer, by overseeing the content on the City’s website, city publications and external media. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: · Manages and serves as the Public Information Office · Serves as media liaison with media and public · Manages and directs city departments in special citywide projects and events · Manages and directs marketing and public relations campaigns for City departments · Prepares and issues official public statements to the media and the public · Plans, initiates, manages, and directs the production of television, radio and newspaper public service announcements · Writes, edits and follows-up news releases · Schedules news interviews · Establish relationships with media representatives · Assists departments, including the police and fire departments, with public information · Plans and coordinates official City news conferences and media events · Strategizes marketing, public relations and community relations with top administration and City departments · Coordinates media and special events · Assists in community relations · Assists City Manager, Mayor and Council in drafting speeches and maintaining other forms of public contact · Coordinates and implements advertising for newspapers, radio and television and writing public service announcements · Responsible for operations and administration and polices of the Public Information Office · Implement marketing and public relations strategies with other City departments · Works closely with elected officials and City administration to promote the City’s image and vision · Supervises and monitors department staff and monitors departmental activities · Develops promotional marketing materials through products (i.e. Annual Report, project campaigns, etc.) · Plans and implements graphic design and media relations work · Creates, directs and implements marketing initiatives · Assist City Emergency Operations in planning and implementing Emergency Plan · Remains on call during emergencies · Provides content to City website, and all City social media · Meets regularly with other department heads on projects and campaigns · Takes event photographs · Performs other job-related duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: · Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, financial reports, legal documents and government regulations · Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from outside organizations, customers, or citizens. · Ability to prepare reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals · Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the public and management · Must be customer-service oriented, always have a customer friendly attitude and professional appearance · Must be able to work effectively under pressure and stringent schedules and produce accurate and satisfactory results · Must be able to communicate effectively, at all levels, both orally and in writing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: · High School Diploma or GED. · This position requires a bachelor’s degree in public relations, Journalism, Marketing, Mass Communications or media related major · This position requires 10-15 of municipal communication and marketing experience CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: · Must complete an Employment Application. · Must pass a pre-employment background check. · Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
