Systems Layout Designer (BIW Body Shop)

Location:

Southfield, MI. Hybrid work schedule

Pay: 35-37/hour

Long term contract to hire

Overview

We are seeking a skilled

System Layout Mechanical Designer

with a strong Body Shop background to support North American automotive assembly projects. If you have expertise in AutoCAD and FactoryCAD, experience with BIW (Body-in-White) systems, and a solid grasp of relevant industry standards, we invite you to apply.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, modify, and develop system layouts for automotive Body Assembly (BA) using AutoCAD and FactoryCAD software

- Interpret and implement customer (GM, Stellantis, Tesla, etc.), corporate, and plant standards

- Apply knowledge of BA GEO and Fixture Tools for framing, bodyside, and sub-assembly systems

- Ensure compliance with RIA, OSHA, and NIOSH standards related to robot guarding and panel placement

- Analyze and develop installation risk assessments, PFMEA, MFMEA, and CE/safety requirements

- Manage part flow within automotive assembly/body shops and coordinate with vendors (Weld Guns, End of Arm Tooling, etc.)

- Work in 2D and 3D model spaces, maintaining organized layouts and accurate dimensioning

- Revise existing models ("Kits") and create new designs, producing supporting documentation (e.g., Kit Sheets)

- Collaborate and consult with Technical Leaders, Project Engineers, and Senior Mechanical Engineers to resolve design challenges

- Translate between major CAD file formats (SAT, IGES, JT, etc.) into AutoCAD

- Perform site visits for installation/start-up, machine acceptance, domestic and international issue resolution

- Attend regular team meetings

Required Qualifications & Skills

Experience:

- Minimum 5 years in Mechanical Design/Engineering for Powertrain or Body Assembly (preferably 5-10 years)

- Background in BIW Body Shop, System Layout/Factory Mechanical Design

Education:

- Associate Degree in Mechanical Technology, or equivalent practical experience

Technical Proficiency:

- Advanced user of AutoCAD and FactoryCAD (2020 or newer)

- Competency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

- Familiarity with North American OEM standards/specifications (GM, Stellantis, Tesla, etc.)

- Solid understanding of BA GEO and Fixture Tools, robot movement, work zones, and tool stack-up

- Risk assessment (Installation Risk Assessment, PFMEA, MFMEA, CE/Safety Risk Assessment)

- Ability to work with vendor documentation, understand assembly plant flows, and basic troubleshooting

CAD Skills:

- High competence with CAD platforms

- Nice to have: Siemens NX, CATIA experience

Travel:

- Willingness to travel domestically (5-20%) and internationally as needed

Preferred Skills

- Experience with plant/operator safety, dunnage, panels, and fencing requirements per customer specifications

- Experience designing cable trays and headers, especially as an ex-pipe fitter with AutoCAD skills

- Knowledge of mechanical controls documents/sequences, ergonomics, and human-machine zones

- Experience with the operation and maintenance of mechanical assembly systems

- Strong blueprint, model, and drawing production skills

- Effective troubleshooting and decision-making for mechanical errors

- Experience with pipe fitting, header fabrication, and controls drawings

- Ability to independently resolve technical challenges and work collaboratively in a project-based team environment
