Job DescriptionAs a Pharmacy Technician I, in a hospital setting, provides specialized services surrounding the use, monitoring, and handling of medical drugs, including investigational new drugs that require more detailed processes to ensure safe and appropriate use. Accurately follows workflow procedures including prescription processing, medication preparation, and distribution to patient. Duties are performed under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and according to professional standards and practices.ResponsibilitiesPerform a variety of clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., patient interviews, medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow-up calls, and collection of clinical data for the pharmacist).May restock automatic dispensing cabinets and anesthesia workstations as needed.Handle medications in accordance with department, regulatory and legal requirements (e.g., medication records, pulling outdated/unusable medications).Collaborates with immediate pharmacy team, insurance companies and customers alike to resolve issues, ensure accuracy and deliver a timely resolution of any medication or insurance related concern.Assist with a variety of basic clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow up calls).Efficient operation and basic level of technical support for specialty machinery, equipment, devices or software necessary in performing job functions (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing cabinets, compounders, drug delivery devices, retail pharmacy systems).Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas.Complete and document all assigned safety and quality activities in compliance with department proceduresPrepare and/or compound non-sterile medications at select locationsManage individual responsibilities while supporting team members and contributing to broader team goals.Perform other related duties incidental as assignedQualificationsKnowledge of drug names, medical terminology and pharmaceutical calculationsAbility to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipmentKnowledge of basic inventory procedures and pharmacy information systems.Meticulous attention to detail; exhibits accuracy and thoroughness while monitoring own work for quality.Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills.Ability to work in situations involving uncertainty and rapid changeA solid customer service acumen to effectively work with both internal and external customers and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.Proficient computer skills.Requires critical thinking skills with the ability to implement solutions.Strong organizational skills, including staying focused on assigned tasks and using time and resources effectively and efficiently to achieve job expectations.EDUCATION:High school diploma or equivalentCompletion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program.Acceptance into pharmacy school preferred.LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:Registered with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy in good standingCertification from the pharmacy technician certification board is required within 12 months of hire.About UsBenefits Overview UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Retirement - Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers. Time Off - A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options: Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire. Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken. Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment. Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year.
