Network & Telecommunications Position

Under the direction of a Manager or above, works to install, maintain and evaluate network systems and communications. Troubleshoots complex network issues involving various factors. Conducts network architecture design, feasibility and cost studies. Must have extensive knowledge of Internet, computer, routers, switches, firewall, etc. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Job Functions: Investigate alerts and follow established procedures to remediate conditions that do not follow approved policies and guidelines. Performs replacement of field swappable components of networking equipment Maintains inventory of networking equipment and accessories Provides technical assistance and support for incoming networking queries and issues Works with vendors to coordinate support and warranty services Documents network engineering policies, procedures, and results of tests Maintains and configures layer 2 networking equipment Maintains and configures layer 3 networking equipment Installs and manages networking management platforms Maintains system documentation Assists faculty, staff, and students with technical questions related to managed systems Reads and interprets technical manuals Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions Works with diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of University students and staff Other duties as assigned This position is designated as a Tier 2 respondent for designated campus emergencies and events. In the event of a declared campus emergency, the position incumbent will make every effort to return to campus when directed. During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job-related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence. Marginal Functions: Attends meetings, utilizes staff resources when situations require additional expertise, serves on committees, task forces, and work groups. Departmental Requirements: Excellent verbal and written communication skills High quality customer service skills Must be a self-starter, driven, and able to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment Proficient knowledge of TCP/IP, OSI model, LAN networking, network troubleshooting, routing protocols, IPv6, and multicast protocols Experience with networking technology in educational or corporate environment that supports 30,000+ endpoints Experience in an networking environment with equipment from multiple vendors Familiarity with Change Management process as it relates to network infrastructure Machinery/Equipment Used Regularly: 50%

Hardware installation Supervision Received: This position requires occasional verbal and/or written direction and can generally work independently. The supervisor shall ensure that the incumbent is aware of and adheres to state, board of trustees, university, and departmental policies. Physical Requirements: Frequent: Standing, Walking, Sitting Occasional: Lifting up to 30 lbs, Lifting 30 - 60 lbs, Pushing/Pulling, Reaching, Climbing, Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching Other Unusual Physical Activities or Working Conditions Required: Ability to maintain tools, work on ladders, follow campus standards and participates in workorder/ticketing system. Required Qualifications: This position requires either (a) Master's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and four years of experience directly related to the job functions; (b) Bachelor's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and six years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c) 10 years of direct experience. Statements of Understanding: This position requires a background check. In conjunction with the University's policy, this position may also require a credit check.
