Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities All Steel Handlers are expected to: Perform the daily Safety Startup Checklist for forklifts and overhead cranes, identifying and reporting any equipment issues. Review shift status using the Shift Communication Sheet. Use the Intranet to access and review the production schedule to understand daily needs and job statuses. Unload steel coils from trucks using the overhead crane or forklift. Inspect incoming coils and verify thickness and width measurements upon receipt. Receive coils into the system using Plex transactions. Complete, sign, and stamp all receiving paperwork. Transfer coils to designated locations in the system for either production or storage. Issue material tags as required. Pre-stage coils in designated locations for upcoming jobs. Assist Press Operators with coil changes and machine setups. Band, reweigh, and print new tags for partial coils as necessary. Clean up banding and debris after hanging coils to maintain a safe and clear steel bay. Assist the Operations Team in emptying trash and cardboard containers. Assist the Operations Team in emptying scrap hoppers, as time allows. Support Engineering by cutting coil strips for tryout and development needs. Use Plex to log equipment repair needs. Support the Quality team with rework of non-conforming product, following set instructions and meeting required production rates. Follow daily 5S requirements posted in the work area and allocate time appropriately for completion. Steel Handler Progression Levels
Level 2.1 – Fundamental Proficiency Complete the training structure (Form #O3055) and demonstrate listed skills to the Team Leader. Effectively apply 5S principles to maintain a clean and organized work area daily. Demonstrate correct use of measuring devices and crane scale. Demonstrate proficiency in Plex operations, including:
Move Container Receive Product Create/Reprint Tags Adjust Weights
Demonstrate how to properly reject coils. Possess a valid Forklift Certification. Possess a valid Overhead Crane Certification. Level 3.1 – Intermediate Proficiency Receive raw materials in accordance with current work instructions. Identify various material defects prior to feeding material into the straightener. Perform accurate cycle counts. Demonstrate proper startup and shutdown procedures for both mandrel and straightener; identify and describe the function of all key components. Safely and effectively dispose of various types of scrap metal using a forklift. Maintain and prioritize items on the Steel Bay DMAIC Board
Level 3.2 – Advanced Proficiency Independently operate both the mandrel and straightener. Pre-stage and prepare materials effectively for the press operator. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of straightener settings and changes for each press. Set up a coil without pre-defined settings, including proper setup of reel, rollers, air pressure, and loop. Make accurate adjustments to material in the straightener to ensure proper performance.
Level 3.3 – Leadership & Mentorship Maintain
zero Final Warning disciplinary actions . Exhibit a consistently positive attitude and willingness to assist team members. Train others effectively in all prior skill levels using the Steel Handler Training Structure. Manage and prioritize DMAIC Board tasks, including Pareto issues and corrective actions. Lead daily steel bay audits and complete necessary corrections in a timely manner. Requirements: Education and Experience Must be able to read and write. High school diploma or equivalent required.
Physical Requirements Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 35 lbs independently.
Travel Requirements Minimal travel required for this position.
Language Requirements Must be able to read and write in English.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Safety glasses and hearing protection required in all manufacturing areas. Additional PPE must be worn as needed based on task or area.
Work Environment Exposure to continuous loud noises. Potential hazards requiring extreme caution to avoid serious injury. Safe manufacturing environment with occasional:
Noise, dust, grease, and moisture Hot and humid conditions Fumes and strong odors Exposure to chemicals and heated tanks Risk of cuts or burns Intermittent exposure to outdoor weather
