The Area Manager has overall responsibility for the daily operations of a Chemical Product Marine terminal, including all operational activities, performance management of staff, safety, quality control, budgeting, compliance and regulatory matters. The Area Manager is also responsible for Company facilities/assets (tanks, railcars, wharf, truck rack, remediation sites, etc.) within his/her geographic area. This position will manage Operators, Maintenance Technicians and Office personnel.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
The Area Manager is responsible for effective and efficient oversight and day-to-day management of the terminal.
This includes, but is not limited to:
Staying within and managing budget; providing detailed explanations for any budget variance requests and/or overrides.
Acting as a liaison between terminal activities and customers in order to maintain efficient delivery and resolve any difficulties relating to scheduling, overages, shortages, and quality control issues.
Supervising functions related to outside contractors operating on company property or in company areas in order to protect company interests.
Effectively coordinating all requirements affecting commercial products at applicable assignment locations, including quality control issues, additives, notification procedures, sampling, meter calibration, coordination of witnesses when required, overages, shortages, and service interruptions.
Developing short and long-range plans, goals and objectives for terminal operations.
Supervising staff, which may include any or all of the following: Operations Supervisor, Operators, Technician(s), Scheduler, and other personnel as assigned. Key responsibility is to maximize performance of staff.
Planning and organizing workloads and staff assignments, establishing performance goals, reviewing progress, advocating for employee development and coaching performance, directing changes in priorities and schedules as needed to assure work is completed in an efficient and timely manner.
Initiating and recommending selection/promotion of staff, salary change considerations, and disciplinary matters.
Conducting performance evaluations; promptly and appropriately addressing poor performance and/or inappropriate behaviors of employees by working with/consulting management team and Human Resources.
Overseeing and monitoring new hire training to ensure each employee is fully trained and understands their job responsibilities.
Assisting in the planning and execution of capital projects in the area.
Responding to emergencies 24/7 and other upsets, which may require working nights and/or weekends.
Maintaining company assets in good working order in order to maximize up-time.
Remaining current on developments in the field.
Coordinating department services with other departments, governmental agencies, and customers.
Managing projects within assigned area of responsibility.
Ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations affecting marine and/or terminal operations.
Coordinating company response relating to actions of outside contractors which includes site inspection, preparation of as-built drawings, and confirmation of scope of work to be completed.
Routinely inspecting facilities to ensure compliance with maintenance, housekeeping, environmental and safety requirements, including appropriate handling of hazardous waste.
Consistently maintaining and demonstrating a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
In all decisions/actions, utilizing sound judgment by making decisions and/or taking action based on logical assumptions derived from factual information gathered; seeking out information from established policies and procedures and/or knowledge experts; seeking input from others.
