Job Title

The purpose of this classification is to provide body, glass, paint repair, and wiring services to all fleet equipment. This is accomplished by providing estimates and necessary repairs on units involved in collision or minor damages and normal wear and tear, installing different beds and aftermarket items, installing emergency lights or advisory lights and equipment, prepping and painting, suspension frame repair, and interior and upholstery repairs. Distinguishing characteristics positions in this class take the lead in performing the most complex diagnosis and repair of fleet vehicles, including full engine, transmission, and rear-end work. Essential Functions

Performs skilled diagnostics and troubleshooting utilizing automated diagnostic tools in combination with the body of acquired knowledge in the field. Makes major repairs by replacing major components such as engines, brakes, heating and air conditioning systems, drive trains and transmissions. Performs preventative maintenance services of County trucks, apparatus, and/or equipment; services include changing oil, air filters, fuel filters, fan belts, radiator hoses and spark plugs. Inspects and performs hydraulic brake repairs, including the replacing of the master brake cylinder, brake pads, calipers, hydraulic lines; replaces or repairs clutches on manual transmissions. Repairs and/or maintains electrical and electronic systems controls, by checking, testing, and replacing faulty components, circuit modules, printed circuit boards, and similar devices; inspects, tests, and aligns lights and maintains electrical systems and controls. Maintains and calibrates shop tools, machinery, and equipment; completes service orders to document parts and labor used in service and repair activities. Road tests the operation of trucks/equipment upon completion of repairs to ensure proper functioning and safe operating condition. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum qualifications high school diploma or GED; supplemented by five years progressively skilled experience in heavy trucks/equipment service, maintenance and repair. Licenses and Certifications

Valid Commercial Driver's License with HAZMAT Endorsement, or Commercial Driver's License is required and must be able to obtain HAZMAT endorsement within three months of employment. The department prefers one or more of the following certifications: Certifications from National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE), Preventative maintenance, Medium/Heavy truck brakes, Diesel Engines, Electrical/Electronic systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning refrigerant handling and recovery, Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Pumps on Fire Apparatus. Physical Abilities

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory requirements some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental factors performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, or traffic hazards.
