This position performs a variety of basic duties related to the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and servicing of grounds, facilities, right-of-ways, and infrastructure. Positions in this class perform a variety of maintenance activities and other duties related to repair, or preventive maintenance or repairs of electrical/mechanical equipment of the wastewater treatment plant, wastewater lift stations, and stormwater lift stations. Work is performed within established procedures with individual judgment limited to proper handling of, and minor changes to, accepted routine. Although the position may operate independently, supervision or guidance is readily available, and the incumbents' work is frequently reviewed. This is the first level in the WWTP Maintenance Technician series. The WWTP Maintenance Technician II is distinguished from the WWTP Maintenance Technician I by certification. Progression through the WWTP Technician classification series to a WWTP Maintenance Technician II is required and is effective upon meeting the requirements for the next higher classification for Wastewater Certification. Examples of Job Duties
Other duties may be assigned as needed. Assists in operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical/mechanical equipment associated with the city's wastewater treatment plant, wastewater lift stations, and stormwater lift stations including pumps, mechanical seals, packing glands, various sump systems, polymer mixing equipment, compressors, motors, internal combustion engines, flow meters, bubblier systems, samplers, valves, instrumentation, telemetry systems, mechanical barscreens, dewatering compactors, emergency generators, scales, hoists, aerators, floats, piping, generators, hoses, weirs, curtains, and baffles. Assists in maintaining and updating files, maps, and other records, related to operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment plant and lift stations. Maintains records of all maintenance performed in association with the duties of this position. Maintains buildings and grounds at wastewater treatment plant and wastewater lift stations. Qualifications
A combination of the experience, education, and training listed below which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of this position. Experience: One year of experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position or a related position in utility operation and maintenance. Education and Training: High school diploma or GED. Licenses or Certificates: Must possess an Operator-in-Training (OIT) certification from the Department of Ecology for wastewater within twelve (12) months of the date of hire. Must possess a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Group I certification within eighteen (18) months of the date of hire. Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire date, a Washington State Driver's License. Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, the following certifications: Washington State Class B Commercial Driver's License flagger certification first aid and CPR forklift confined space Washington State Electrician License preferred. The physical demands and characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those occurring in the performance of the essential functions of this job. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; kneel, bend, or climb and to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis; lift 25 to 50 pounds on an occasional basis; and lift and/or move 50 to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position regularly works outside in various weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee may be exposed to physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment and also will sometimes work in hazardous areas under hazardous conditions. The employee occasionally works in traffic, near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock and radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position works a regular schedule, however, incumbents may be called in to work at irregular times in emergency situations.
