Adjunct faculty members are needed for the Department of English and Modern Languages at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Resumes will be reviewed as needed for each semester. Benefits include medical, prescription, dental, and accidental death & dismemberment. The medical benefits are subject to subsidy restrictions based upon number of courses taught. Voluntary participation in supplemental retirement accounts (SRAs) to include TIAA, Fidelity, or MSRP-Nationwide; participation in state sponsored MetLife life insurance and/or USM sponsored MetLife life insurance plan; long term disability insurance, and the employee assistance program. For Fall 2025, the department seeks candidates who can teach on campus in Princess Anne, Maryland. We are specifically seeking instructors for socio-linguistics courses and digital humanities courses. Occasionally the department might need instructors who can teach online. Successful candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the mission and value of an HBCU education and be able to speak fluently on the dynamics of race, gender, and social inclusivity in their teaching. Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities may include courses in Composition 1 and 2, Technical Writing, and Speech. Qualified instructors may also teach other courses as needed in our literature, linguistics, English education, or digital media tracks. Qualifications: Master's degree with at least 18 graduate credits in the discipline. Exceptional candidates with a BA in the discipline and 5+ years of industry/professional experience in the discipline may be considered for production-oriented courses. At least one year of college teaching experience in the discipline as Instructor of Record. Experience teaching with a Learning Management System (such as Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to use technology in the classroom to enhance student learning. A strong commitment to teaching excellence. Ability to instruct students of varying preparation and abilities. Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with colleagues, peers, and students. Ability to create inclusive learning experiences that will help undergraduate students develop the skills of the discipline. Ability to assess student performance and learning. Willingness to implement the department's standardized syllabus as needed. Physical Demands: May require extended periods of standing, bending, sitting at desk. May require lifting up to 25 lbs. Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally. Requires operation of a variety of office equipment. Preferences: Three years of college teaching experience in an English-related discipline. Experience with Canvas. Licenses/Certifications: The title Lecturer will ordinarily be used to designate appointments of persons who are serving in a teaching capacity for a limited time or part-time. The normal requirement is a Master's degree in the field of instruction or a related field, or equivalent professional experience in the field of instruction. Appointments to this rank are typically one to three years and are renewable.
