Laboratory Supervisor
Position Summary: The position will be the primary supervisor of the evening and night shift laboratory staff and will be a member of the Core Lab Leadership Team. This position will function primarily as a bench technologist, with responsibility for the technical aspects of all testing within their assigned area. The Evening/Night supervisor will have technical responsibility for the operation of all instrumentation within their assigned area and must be capable of making independent decisions using good judgment during the assigned shift. The Evening/Night supervisor will be expected to assist the Core Lab Administration in all other functions and activities as deemed necessary and specific assignments may be changed as necessitated by varying workloads. They will serve as the leader of the shift and provide help and guidance to the staff on the shift, will troubleshoot problems, field questions from other clinical staff including physicians and perform other supervisory work as it arises. Will also work on the bench as needed. Education, License & Cert: Must meet the qualifications of a Laboratory Supervisor as defined by the New York State Department of Health, Pennsylvania Department of Health and CLIA. Certification as a Medical Technologist by the ASCP Board of Registry or Board eligible preferred. Experience: Experienced Medical Technologist with a minimum of 6 years' experience in their respective specialty. Certification by ASCP Board of Registry or Board eligible is preferred. Essential Functions: Provide technical leadership in assigned specialized areas within the Core Lab. Keeps up to date with current laboratory practices, procedures and techniques within their respective specialty. Maintains the required level of expertise through a variety of continuing education activities such as attendance at workshops/seminars. Is an active member of the Core Lab Leadership team. Assists the Core Lab Leadership team, Clinical Lab Director, and the assigned Pathologist in the evaluation of new instruments, equipment, and/or new technical procedures. Makes recommendations for the acquisition of new instruments, equipment, and/or new technical procedures. Shares responsibility for validation of all new equipment, instruments, and testing procedures in the Core Lab. Shares responsibility for training staff on all new equipment, instruments and testing procedures in the Core Lab on evening and night shift. Coordinates and takes the lead in integrating Core Lab functions throughout all shifts, including scheduling, monitoring, data collection, data presentation and the implementation of approved new initiatives. Has primary responsibility for the proper maintenance of all equipment during the assigned shift. Assures all policy, procedure, test record keeping, quality control, quality assurance documentation required are maintained and up to date which includes the assurance that the accuracy of all testing is monitored through statistical analysis and developing quality reports. Maintains an adequate inventory of expendable supplies for immediate use in the department. Brings any problems of a technical nature to the attention of the Core Lab Leadership team, Clinical Lab Director and/or the assigned Pathologist. Uses good judgement in the communication of all relevant issues, problems and/or developments in the department to the Core Lab Leadership team. Communicates thoroughly to staff all relevant changes, updates and developments. Assures that their department is in compliance with all regulatory agencies. Communicates any potential deficiencies to the Core Lab Leadership team, Clinical Lab Director and Pathologist as necessary. Assists the Core Lab Leadership team in any performance improvement/Quality Assurance activities. Is actively involved in the instruction of the Medical Technology students when applicable. Performs and documents non?routine and routine automated, semi?automated and manual laboratory tests and related functions such as quality control and instrument maintenance procedures. Observes proper safety practice in performance of job duties. Follows established Clinic and lab policies and procedures. Schedules personnel, develops staffing plans and departmental assignments/re?assignments under overall guidance of Clinical Lab Director. Performs performance evaluations and participates in/or conducts disciplinary sessions as needed and maintains the documentation. Conducts employee interviews, orientation, competencies, and education sessions as needed and maintains the documentation. Conducts employee competency assessments, unless the Evening/Night Shift Supervisor has an associate degree, which this function is then not applicable. Uses good judgment and maintains a professional, mature, positive attitude while performing the job. Assists in maintaining departmental operations within the budgetary goals.
