Street Maintenance Temporary Position

Reidsville Public Works, NC $31,200.00 - $53,905.04 Annually Full-Time Temporary Streets Division Note: This is a temporary position with the City of Reidsville. There are no benefits associated with a temporary position. However, if your performance is satisfactory, and if there is a vacancy available, this position could become a permanent, benefitted, full-time position at the end of the temporary status. An employee in this class operates medium equipment and a variety of specialized power equipment including dry saw, wet saw, jack hammer for job completion of street maintenance and sidewalks. Work involves forming and finishing concrete such as curb and sidewalk, installing pipe for storm sewer systems, and other general street maintenance such as spraying and cleaning storm drains. The employee provides tree removal, ice and snow removal, and water/sewer repair in emergency situations. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and policies. The employee sets, forms, pours, and finishes concrete to repair curbs, gutters, driveways, and sidewalks; performs street repairs and patching; lays asphalt; clears roadside and other City properties. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and normal hazards associated with operation of equipment, and working with sewer. Work is performed under the supervision of the Street Supervisor and is evaluated daily observation. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Considerable knowledge of principles, practices, and aspects of street maintenance, storm drainage, water and sewer line maintenance installation. Considerable knowledge of methods used in maintenance of public streets and related facilities. Considerable working knowledge of common tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance work, basic safety precautions and procedures. Ability to understand oral and written directions. Ability to perform medium size equipment. Ability to apply policies and procedures at work. Knowledge of construction and maintenance of water and sewer lines. Knowledge and application of appropriate OSHA standards. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Work in this class is described as moderately strenuous using a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects and may occasionally require some physical exertion to complete tasks. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. An employee must possess the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes and other equipment. The employee is subject to both environmental conditions inside and outside. The employee is subject to hazards, occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risks of electrical shock and vibration. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, or ability to read and write and any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
