A Power Quality Specialist acts as a technical liaison for all CPS Energy customers ranging from residential to the largest consumers that including Commercial, Industrial, Governmental, and Manufacturing. The PQ specialist engages in a large variety of tasks that include electrical investigations, load profiling, Infrared Inspections, Customer site analysis, and technical solutions recommendations. Tasks and responsibilities include: Ensuring all distribution level voltages are within prescribed guidelines set forth by the Public Utility Commission of Texas. Directing testing activities throughout the power delivery process from Generation to final customer on the electrical distribution system. Monitoring performance of voltage control systems to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with PUC guidelines. Overseeing work activities of cross-functional resources engaged in remediation of power quality issues. Assisting in the analysis of power quality monitoring results and providing feedback (reporting) and interpretation (knowledge transfer) to management, staff, and customers. Communicating power quality information to all relevant organizational departments, outside vendors, or contractors. Assisting manager with Account Management and Customer Service departments to define client requirements and expectations. Monitoring distribution equipment sensors and indicators to detect evidence of operating problems. Creating and implementing inspection and testing criteria or procedures for Distribution Automation devices. Investigating and recommending corrections for Radio Frequency Interference complaints affecting customers. Investigating power quality issues internally and externally at customer locations ranging from residential to Large-scale users. Directing power quality improvement plans and measurement strategies. Documenting testing procedures, methodologies, or criteria for ensuring CPS Energy meets PUCT standards for voltage delivery. Responsible for running reporting features of PQ View software for daily PQ analytics. Performing Infrared Inspections at customers' locations to determine possible component failures before they occur. Identifying critical points in the distribution system and specifying voltage sampling procedures to be used at these points. Adjusting controls to regulate the efficient flow of power between substations and customer service points. Communicating with systems operators to regulate and coordinate line voltages of the distribution system. Performing other duties as assigned. Minimum skills include: Extensive electrical distribution and power systems experience working in an energized environment both primary and secondary voltages ranging from 34.5Kv to 120V. Extensive experience in using testing equipment to include multimeter for testing voltage and current safely in an energized environment below 600 volts. Ability to obtain Certified Power Quality Professional within 2 years of accepting job. Ability to obtain IR Thermographer Level I certification within 2 years of accepting job. Ability to obtain TVI/RFI certification within 2 years of accepting job. Proficiency in MS Office, SAP, OMS, GIS & PI. Effective oral & written communication skills relative to position. Able to persuade others to see his or her point of view. A valid Texas driver's license with a history of safe driving record in accordance with CPS Energy policies, procedures, safety standards and applicable laws and regulations. Ability to work overtime, including weekends and call duty. Ability to perform technical mathematical functions. Ability to read, write, and understand technical instructions. Ability to climb ladders and work in high elevations. Ability to work with energized circuitry and in close proximity of energized high voltage substations, switch yards, and power plants. Ability to work with minimum direct supervision, allocates time and attention based on what is the most important to achieve key goals and objectives; approaches work in an organized and systematic manner. Project management that includes effectively managing tasks, informing interested parties on project milestones. Keeping staff in the loop on project status and any hurdles that may derail the project timelines. When required redirect project assets to keep in moving to achieve desired results. Elevates project status to leadership when appropriate or when assistance is required. Ability to distinguish colors to identify wires and/or components. Ability to initiate work activities & research tech data to assist in defining requirements & resources needed to implement new ideas; approaches innovation with a practical, task-oriented mindset; converts ideas from gen concepts into actionable plans. Acts on his/her own without being prompted; handles problems independently; able to resolve issues without relying on extensive help from others; does more than is expected or asked. Preferred qualifications include: Associate degree in Electrical Technology IR Thermographer Level II certification Certified Energy Manager CEM (AEE Certification) Competencies include: Demonstrating Initiative Communicating Effectively Serving Customers Resolving Conflict Displaying Technical Expertise Delivering High Quality Work Minimum education includes: Technical College degree in Electrical Field or Electric distribution experience or in lieu of degree Required certifications include: Working environment includes: Indoor and outdoor work, walking, standing, sitting, hearing, bending, crouching. Employee may be subject to extreme noise, extreme temperatures, electrically energized environments and hazardous conditions. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator. Use of power measurement and infrared equipment. Ability to travel to and from client meetings, training sessions and other business related events. After hours work may be required. Physical demands include: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
