Position Overview
Whitford Country Club seeks a seasoned, emotionally intelligent, and forward-thinking General Manager to lead the Club through an exciting and pivotal chapter. This individual will oversee all aspects of operations including golf, racquets, food & beverage, aquatics, events, and member experience. The General Manager will work closely with the Board of Governors to provide vision, continuity, and leadership, while defining and elevating what "great" looks like at Whitford Country Club. This is an opportunity for a strong, strategic operator and relationship-builder to inspire a high-performing team, develop a clear sense of identity for the club, and create a sustainable, values-driven culture that members and staff are proud to be part of. Reports to: Club President Supervises: Superintendent, Head Golf Professional, Controller, Head Racquets Professional, Executive Chef, Food & Beverage Manager About the Club Whitford Country Club, located in Exton, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1955 when Al Ostheimer inspired a community meeting in a barn to dedicate 168 acres for a shared sporting experience. Purchased from Wycoff Smith, the land included a farmhouse and barn that became the original clubhouses. Named after nearby Whitford Village, the Club initially hosted fox hunting before its first nine golf holes opened in 1956, followed by a full facility launch on Memorial Day 1957. Renowned architect William Gordon designed the course, known for its championship-level play and picturesque Chester County setting. Over the years, Whitford has seen significant upgrades: a major Clubhouse renovation in 1995, a vision for long-term development in 1996, and expanded office space in 2001. From 20202024, a bold Long-Range Master Plan led to sweeping updates, including full upper-level Clubhouse renovations, new locker rooms and dining spaces, new pickleball and tennis courts, and enhancements to the pool area. The golf course saw a new irrigation system and multiple hole redesigns by architect Jim Nagle. Whitford remains committed to delivering championship amenities, exceptional service, and a premier member experience. Build trust across the club: Establish credibility with staff, members, and the Board through clear communication, consistency, and presence. Stabilize food & beverage operations: Provide strong leadership, set clear expectations, and provide key F&B leadership to elevate performance and service. Strengthen staff structure and culture: Address staffing gaps, improve morale, and foster accountability and collaboration across departments. Refocus board on governance: Develop productive relationships with the Board and executive committee that allow them to move away from day-to-day operations. Shape the Club's strategic vision: Partner with the Board to define the Whitford experience and develop a long-term plan for the club's future. Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Culture Supervise and support all department heads across agronomy, golf, food & beverage, racquets, aquatics, and events. Foster a professional, collaborative, and service-oriented culture. Serve as a unifying presence for staff and members, gaining trust and leading by example. Operations & Experience Ensure exceptional day-to-day operations across all club facilities. Lead the process to define the "Whitford Experience," aligning facilities, programs, and service standards around a consistent member value proposition. Oversee physical plant and maintenance of club grounds, ensuring long-term operational integrity. Financial Stewardship Develop and manage the club's annual operating and capital budgets in partnership with the Controller. Regularly review financial performance and recommend areas for improvement or efficiency. Advocate for thoughtful investment and budget discipline while managing expectations across the board and committees. Membership & Community Building Actively engage with members across all demographics; be present, visible, and approachable. Design programming and engagement strategies that appeal to families, young professionals, and long-time members alike. Rekindle Whitford's reputation as a warm, family-focused club. Strengthen the Club's reputation in the local market. Design and execute strategies to attract and retain members. Work collaboratively across departments to elevate the brand and value of Whitford in the broader community. Governance & Board Relations Collaborate closely with the Board of Governors to develop long-range plans and priorities. Bring maturity, patience, and diplomacy to board interactionshelping transition the Board and committees toward a more strategic, advisory role. Provide transparent updates, guide alignment, and push back thoughtfully when needed. Required Skills & Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience in private club management; 10 years preferred. Proven success managing multi-departmental operations and cross-functional teams. Strong budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis skills. Understanding of agronomy, golf operations, F&B, events, and club member services. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in club management software and financial systems. CMAA membership required; Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation preferred or commitment to achieve it within 2 years.
