Career Mentor Position at Nevada Career Studio

The Nevada Career Studio (NCS) is looking for motivated students to join the Career Mentor team for the 2025-2026 academic year! Located on the second floor of the Pennington Student Achievement Center (PSAC), the Nevada Career Studio is the centralized career services office for all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni. As a Career Mentor, you'll play a vital role in helping your peers with career exploration, job and internship searches, resume and cover letter writing, Handshake navigation, mock interviews, and much more through drop-in career coaching. You'll gain professional experience in an office setting, network with employers and campus partners, receive ongoing training and 1:1 coaching, and have direct access to support for your own career goals. Successful Career Mentors enjoy working with people, are curious problem-solvers, and have a desire to keep learning. If you're a motivated self-starter who takes initiative, embraces feedback, and follows through on responsibilities, this is a great opportunity to grow your communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills while helping others. Job Responsibilities Staff in-person and virtual front desk by providing friendly and attentive customer service, including greeting clients and guests, answering phone calls, taking messages, and directing calls as appropriate Coach clients (students and alumni) on career-related tasks and demonstrate career resources regarding resumes, cover letters, Handshake (online job board), academic CVs, personal statements, statements of purpose, internship search, career-readiness, interview preparation, and networking. Lead career-related presentations and classroom workshops for student organizations and academic courses Work at Nevada Career Studio events, including, but not limited to, career fairs, pop-up tabling events, outreach events Participate in weekly team trainings to deepen your understanding of professionalism, inclusion, career development, and the Studio's services and resources Engage in bi-weekly 1:1 coaching sessions to reflect, set goals, and receive supportive feedback Review and approve job postings in Handshake, using your attention to detail to ensure opportunities are relevant, accurate, and appropriate Take ownership of assigned tasks and office support, completing them reliably and proactively Demonstrate initiative by identifying opportunities to improve services, share ideas, and support teammates Uphold a positive, inclusive, and professional attitude when working with clients, staff, faculty, and employers Required Qualifications Currently enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno with at least one semester completed Good academic standing: Undergraduates: 2.75 GPA minimum and 15 credits/semesters; Graduate students: 3.0 GPA minimum Positive attitude, excellent communication skills, and eagerness to learn Previous customer service experience Commitment to inclusion, equity, and social justice Ability to begin work as soon as September 8, 2025 Preferred Qualifications Experience with working one-on-one with peers Comfort presenting to small and large groups Availability during university breaks (Wintermester, Spring Break, Summer) Schedule Approximate Hours per Week: 6-10 This position is for the 2025-2026 academic year, which may include winter break/Wintermester, Spring Break, and summer session. The Nevada Career Studio will work around your class schedule. Compensation Grade Student Level 1 Hourly wage $12.50
