Peer Support Specialist- Ashland County

Provide peer recovery support services for clients recovering from addiction and/or mental health problems. Under supervision, function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills, serve as an advocate, provide information about peer support in the office and community setting. Under direction, ensure that the activities of this position and relevant programs are consistent with the mission, vision and values of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland. Perform a wide range of tasks to assist peers in regaining independence within the community and ownership over their own recovery process. Help clients identify and expand their natural support network. Assist clients in overcoming barriers to reintegrating into the community and connect them to ancillary, therapeutic and supportive services as deemed appropriate. Assist clients gain hope and learn to identify their strengths. Articulate personal goals for recovery through one-to-one and within the Pathways Peer Support Program. Identify and create goals and develop recovery plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid clients in achieving goals. Assist clients in creating their own individual wellness and recovery plans using tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). Learn and use problem-solving techniques. Use ongoing individual and group support information to learn how to identify and calm negative self-talk and fear-based thinking. Support clients in their vocational choices, as needed. Guide clients through job selection and exploration and link them to supportive employment programming to develop the necessary skills to gain and keep employment, as needed. Assist clients in obtaining and maintaining safe and affordable housing of their choosing, if applicable. Obtain services that suit that individual's recovery needs by providing names of staff, community resources and groups that may be beneficial. Develop empowerment skills and combat stigma through self-advocacy. Document all peer support interactions and services as required in the Electronic Health Record. Perform other duties as assigned or directed. Travel throughout the service area is required. Frequent visits to client's residences and/or attendance at community venues required. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, reach, navigate stairs on an occasional basis to conduct home visits. Tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Reading, writing and hand movement including finger dexterity, holding, grasping to manage correspondence, forms/documents, reports, websites, pen, paper, keyboarding, faxing, copying, answering phones, computer and client files required on a frequent basis; Ability to work effectively in an office and at client in-home settings being exposed to a variety of potential ventilation hazards including dust, unsanitary conditions, odors, disease, extreme temperatures inside and outside, etc... Organizing and coordinating schedules; Frequent analyzing and interpreting data and reports; Communicating with the public; Frequent use of computer and telephone/cell phone. Combination of education and experience normally represented by a High School diploma or equivalent, with one year of demonstrated experience working with individuals in the recovery process. Identify as a "recovering person" with a lived experience in recovering from mental health problems and/or addiction, including disorders with psychosis. Certified Peer Support Specialist preferred or completed Ohio Peer Supporter/Peer Specialist training or eligible through Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire. Ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes. Ability to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individuals in self-directed recovery. Ability to assist clients in addressing symptoms using strategies such as positive self-talk. Must have the knowledge and skill set sufficient to use community resources necessary for independent living and ability to teach those skills to other clients with severe mental illness. Must have the knowledge to establish and sustain self-help (mutual support) and educational groups by soliciting input from clients on their strengths and interests. Must be able to form good working and therapeutic relationships. Must have competent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Must be able to effectively and productively work with people of very diverse economic, cultural and administrative backgrounds. Must have a valid Ohio Driver's License, provide copy of driver's license and are subject to a Moving Vehicle Report (MVR) check through the Department of Motor Vehicles annually. Any MVR grade of "unacceptable" is not permitted to operate a vehicle on behalf of Catholic Charities. Must provide proof of auto insurance including effective dates of coverage and maintain minimum liability insurance coverage of $100,000 per individual and $300,000 per occurrence for driving personal vehicle. Must have competent organizational skills, strong detail orientation and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be able to work independently from general instructions. Must have good working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software. Final applicant is required to be fingerprinted to complete background check.
