Position Summary
TheatreSquared seeks a detail-oriented and collaborative Props Assistant to join its Production Department for the 20252026 Season. This seasonal, full-time role supports the Props Manager in the realization, maintenance, and management of all props and set dressing for productions. The ideal candidate has a passion for craft, an eagerness to collaborate across departments, and a strong commitment to creative problem-solving. This position will begin in fall 2025 and conclude at the end of TheatreSquared's 20252026 season in June 2026. While seasonal in nature, there is hope that the selected candidate may return for future seasons or be considered for longer-term opportunities as the organization continues to grow. Key Responsibilities
Assist in the creation, crafting, painting, and fabrication of props and set dressing. Support the Props Manager in research, sourcing, budgeting, and purchasing. Help supervise and train overhire crew, volunteers, or other production staff assisting with props. Attend technical and dress rehearsals, previews, and select performances as assigned. Help educate stage management and actors on the handling, placement, and care of props during rehearsals and performances. Maintain prop integrity throughout the run of each production, including restocking consumables. Assist in the strike and return of props following each show's closing. Support the cleanliness and organization of prop workspaces and storage areas. Maintain accurate prop inventory records and update the prop database. Occasionally serve as Props Manager on designated productions or events. Collaborate across production departments as needed. Qualifications
Previous experience as a props artisan or in a professional theatrical props environment. Hands-on skills in crafting, painting, and construction. Basic knowledge of art history and design styles. Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs., work on ladders, and occasionally operate lifts. Flexible and dependable, with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. Valid driver's license and ability to drive locally and regionally. Comfortable working a flexible schedule, including occasional nights and weekends. Familiarity with safety standards and the use of standard shop tools and materials. Desirable Skills
Experience as a lead Props Manager or Assistant on productions. Post-secondary training in technical theatre (college, internship, or apprenticeship). Strength in one or more of the following:
Sculpting and finishing techniques Scenic painting Sewing, upholstery, or costume crafts Furniture repair and restoration Historical research and period accuracy Graphic design or software skills (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) Microsoft Office and basic spreadsheet documentation
Compensation & Benefits
This is a seasonal, full-time hourly position, with an expected pay range of $18 - $20 an hour, commensurate with experience and based on an average of 30 -40 hours per week. This position is eligible for full benefits during the seasonal period, including health and dental insurance, paid time off, professional development allowance, employer-sponsored long-term and short-term disability, term life insurance.
