R&D Mechanical Engineer

Our TOPTICA Photonics, Inc., Research and Development Mechanical Engineer position is ideal for an engineer who thrives in an innovative technology push atmosphere and enjoys working across disciplines to build real-world systems for multiple photonic industries. As our Research and Development Mechanical Engineer your communication skills and focus on teamwork are critical. You will be responsible for a wide range of responsibilities related to existing and future product line development and manufacturing in the United States. Responsibilities: Working as a member of our Americas Headquarters Research and Development team the Mechanical Engineer responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Designing, developing, prototyping, and testing all aspects of mechanical components, assemblies, and systems for TOPTICAs laser, optical, and photonic products Modeling within and maintaining a local repository of SolidWorks files for all components Generating mechanical drawings for fabrication by outside suppliers Identifying, qualifying, and maintaining suppliers of critical mechanical components Work within R&D and in collaboration with the Manufacturing and Service groups to ensure quality, performance, manufacturability, and serviceability of systems Assisting with the transfer of mechanical designs into production Collaborating with production team on the development of assembly fixtures and automation to ensure efficient and high-quality manufacturing Failure testing and analysis of mechanical components and assemblies Periodic travel to TOPTICA headquarters in Munich, Germany, to suppliers, and to beta test sites as needed Other duties as assigned Requirements: Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or closely related discipline from accredited university or college Proficiency in SolidWorks for creation of solid models, assemblies, renderings, and fabrication drawings Demonstrated hands-on ability to evaluate mechanical form, fit, and function of components, prototypes, and final assemblies Experience with rapid prototyping techniques (FDM/SLA/SLS/etc.) for design evaluation Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills Willing to work 100% on-site Due to the nature of the duties of this position, U.S. citizenship is required Strongly preferred Masters degree in mechanical engineering or closely related discipline from accredited university or college Experience with and knowledge of optomechanical systems for laser beam steering and control Experience with precision mechanical operations common to lasers and photonics such as single-mode fiber coupling Experience with design for and testing shock and vibration insensitivity Experience with motion control to include interfacing for precision positioning and automation Programming (Python strongly preferred) for interfacing, data acquisition, and automation Use of native SolidWorks or third-party software for finite element analysis of mechanical properties (stress, deflection, etc.) as well as equilibrium and dynamic thermal systems and heat flow Experience with ISO 10110 covering drawings for optical elements and systems
