Maintenance Action Team Project
This project requires a cohort of three placements to serve for three weeks on a Maintenance Action Team project at Kenai Fjords National Park in Seward, AK. The project goal is to renovate the visitor center courtyard by replacing the surface paver stones. NPS will provide a worksite lead and an area for the cohort to camp near Exit Glacier. The SCA will provide the placements with a rental vehicle to commute from camp to the worksite and to town for groceries. The cohort may include one lead intern who would oversee camp. Location: Seward, AK Schedule: September 2, 2025 - September 23, 2025 Key Duties and Responsibilities: The Visitor Center Courtyard is directly adjacent to the Kenai Fjords Visitors Center in downtown Seward, AK. The existing pavers will be removed and disposed of as directed by the NPS. Once the courtyard is cleared, the existing base will be excavated, and the subgrade will be compacted to ensure a stable base. The base material will be placed and compacted, followed by a layer of bedding sand. The pavers will be placed. Finally, the installation will be completed by applying polymetric sand according to the manufacturer's directions to secure the pavers and prevent weed growth. SCA placements will participate in this project as directed by NPS staff. They will not be asked to operate any heavy equipment that may be involved in excavation. Marginal Duties: If the project is completed in less than 3 weeks, then placements will perform duties as assigned by developed recreation staff. Required Qualifications: Candidates must have completed an SCA training in Alaska in 2025, including wilderness first aid, bear awareness, and outdoor living skills. A preference is given to participants in the 2025 Alaska Corps Team program, including Trail teams, Wildland Fire teams, and Habitat Restoration teams. This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority. Preferred Qualifications: Candidates who served in Alaska in 2025 but who did not complete an SCA training may be considered if they completed an agency-delivered bear awareness training and served in a backcountry position. Candidates who successfully completed an SCA driver's test are preferred. At least one placement must be currently cleared to drive with the SCA.
