Assistant Professor Position in Nineteenth-Century British/Transatlantic Literature

Carleton College's Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in nineteenth-century British/Transatlantic literature. We especially welcome candidates with secondary specialization in the environmental humanities, queer studies, discourses of race and empire, or science and technology. The teaching load for this position is five courses annually, taught over three ten-week terms. As a department and college with a strong commitment to undergraduate education, we are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching, mentoring, and supporting students. Applications should include a cover letter, a c.v. with the names and contact details of three references, and a teaching statement that describes your pedagogical practices and approaches to working with undergraduate students from a wide variety of backgrounds within a residential liberal arts college environment. Short-listed candidates will be asked for additional materials. A PhD in English or a related field is required; preference will be given to candidates who will have completed the degree prior to appointment (September 1, 2026). Priority consideration will be given to applications received by November 1, 2025. The expected starting salary range for this position is between $87,480 and $91,460. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
