Connecticut Children’s serves as the primary pediatric teaching hospital for the UConn School of Medicine, has a teaching partnership with the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University and is a research partner of The Jackson Laboratory. With a medical staff of more than 1,000 practicing in more than 30 specialties, Connecticut Children’s is a tertiary referral center that provides outstanding care to children of all ages affected by a wide range of conditions. he Hematology-Oncology Division strives to improve the lives of children with cancer and blood disorders by delivering high-quality family-centered academic health care. CT Children’s continuously improves what they do through discovery and partnerships. They have three broad areas of focus: Family Centered Care, Quality & Safety, and Research & Teaching. Over the past year, they have broadened their programs and developed several areas of expertise. They have continued to develop and expand their programs in Survivorship, Supportive Care, and Hemophilia, and Thrombosis. They also expanded their disease expertise in neuro-oncology, sarcomas, and other solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and in adolescent and young adult oncology. In addition, they also have provided cutting-edge research clinical trials within their Advanced Cancer Program for novel therapeutics. The Hemostasis and Thrombosis program is a federally funded Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC). The program is thriving in four locations including Hartford, Farmington, Shelton and South Hadley, MA. Their team includes administrative support in addition to three physicians, two advanced practice providers, two dedicated HTC nurses, a program manager and a data manager. They continue to work closely within their region on advancing care for bleeding disorder patients and have a successful 340B pharmacy program which is reinvested into the program to benefit patients. Their center participates in national research programs including ATHN and the CDC Community Counts Registry. Their Adolescent Bleeding and Clotting (ABC) Disorders clinic was started in 2021 to benefit patients with bleeding and clotting disorders and has been an incredible resource to provide interdisciplinary care for this population of young women with their adolescent medicine colleagues. The University of Connecticut School of Medicine (UConn Health) and Connecticut Children’s are seeking to recruit a talented physician-scientist for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the areas of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The successful candidate will hold a tenure track appointment in the appropriate academic department at UCH and CT Children’s. The unique combination of rich research capabilities and a dynamic and emerging interdisciplinary environment provides an opportunity to create a truly transformative research program. This position is supported by an initiative established by the State of Connecticut to bolster biomedical research on the Farmington campus. The successful candidate will build and maintain a clinical practice at UCONN Health and CT Children’s and collaborate with the robust cancer research program at JAX. The candidate will be expected to grow and expand UCONN’s clinical, associated research areas, garner support internally and externally to enhance resources, promote partnerships within UCONN Health and externally, continue to recruit and retain outstanding scholars, and champion the pioneering work of the department locally, nationally, and internationally. Position Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to set up a lab and hire personnel. In addition, it is preferred that the candidate participate in academic activities and clinical services. It is preferred that the successful candidate spends up to 20% of their time on clinical services. The successful candidate should be a published independent clinical scientist in key areas of coagulation and thrombosis. The successful candidate could also have a clinical/translational research program and provide direct patient care in the clinic at UCONN Health and Connecticut Children’s. The successful candidate would attend on Pediatric Hematology/Oncology inpatients service on a rotating basis. They will supervise a plan of care, procedures, tests, and consultation ordering. They will share on call weekend rotation and attend weekly conferences for case review and presentation. The finalist will attend weekly department research meetings for review of subjects on clinical trials and possibly participate in the training of medical students, residents, and fellows. Candidates should attend conferences, journal clubs, etc. and present teaching lectures to residents, medical students, and fellows. The finalist may serve as principal investigator on investigator-initiated, cooperative group and industry trials. In addition, participate in regulatory aspects of clinical research including IRB’s and scientific review committees. Support the departmental and divisional research efforts including clinical trial accrual and development and research mentoring. Participate as a team member in providing healthcare, interacting with professional colleagues to provide comprehensive care as a responsible professional. Maintain accurate, legible, and confidential records. When acting in an academic capacity all educators and teachers must adhere to the Compact Between Trainees and Learners, and the appointment with associated teaching to any of UCONN Health’s learners. Faculty are responsible for providing an appropriate learning environment and access to appropriate resources for medical student/resident education. They are required to review the Medical Education competencies, the learning goals and objectives for all relevant educational experiences and any pertinent requirements. They must facilitate access to treatment and follow-up when students and/or residents are exposed to infectious or environmental hazards or other occupational injuries and notify the appropriate dean (Associate Dean for Student Affairs or Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education) so that appropriate follow-up care can be arranged. When acting in an academic capacity candidates should adhere to the goals and objectives of the curriculum and contact the course director and/or program director should any issues arise. Formative, evaluative feedback and timely evaluation of students and/or residents is required. The successful candidate will have some or all of the below qualifications and competencies: Must be eligible for licensure as a physician in the State of Connecticut. A demonstrated track record of clinical experience in the areas of coagulation and thrombosis is required. Track record NIH funded research ideally related to cell-based/bleeding disorders. A demonstrated track record of visionary leadership, strategic thinking, and effective planning in a collaborative, consensus-driven environment. A balance of idealism and pragmatism Reporting Relationships The successful candidate will be appointed to the Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and report directly to Juan C. Salazar, MD, MPH, Chairman of Pediatrics at University of Connecticut School of Medicine and CT Children’s. Educational Requirements The successful candidate will have either an MD or MD/PhD from an accredited institution in the US or foreign equivalent. The finalist must be qualified to obtain a State of Connecticut physician license. The candidate must be a board-certified Pediatrician. It is also important that the successful candidate be boarded or board-eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Travel This role will require minimal travel to yearly conferences and meetings. Location This role will be located at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine campus at 263 Farmington Avenue in Farmington, Connecticut.
