Position Overview
The Head of R&D Strategic Externalization & Business Operations will lead R&D business operations across all functions and budget elements (labor/non-labor) for a $1.2 billion R&D budget. This role involves overseeing the selection, setup, governance, and continuous improvement of key external partnerships to ensure seamless delivery.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Vendor and Partner Management (COE): Lead the Center of Excellence for vendor and partner governance, managing engagement models, performance, issue resolution, and continuous improvement across CROs, consultants, lab service providers, and CMC vendors.
- Functional Business Operations Leadership: Provide strategic direction and oversight to R&D functional liaisons, ensuring alignment with externalized delivery models and operational goals.
- Contract Management Leadership: Oversee contract operations for up to 50 engagements annually, including SOW creation, review, approval workflows, and invoice resolution in partnership with Legal, Finance, and Procurement.
- Capacity Planning CoE: Develop and implement scalable, data-driven capacity planning frameworks to support proactive resourcing aligned with portfolio demands.
- CMC Vendor Oversight (REDC): Manage governance and performance of CMC vendors to ensure service delivery, compliance, and alignment with development timelines.
- SOW & Consultant Engagement Process Ownership: Optimize processes for onboarding, SOW management, and financial reconciliation for consultants.
- CRO & Business Development Partnerships: Drive strategy and governance of CRO partnerships and business development engagements.
- Lab Services Operations: Oversee operations for routine lab support providers, ensuring quality and compliance.
- Cross-Functional Business Operations Alignment: Act as R&D liaison with Finance, Procurement, Legal, and other partners to improve end-to-end operations.
Education & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
- 15+ years in R&D, Business Operations, or Clinical Operations.
- Proven success in managing complex partnerships and building teams over 10 years.
- Leadership experience in managing global matrix teams.
- Vendor oversight and management expertise.
