Overview
As an Automation and Controls Specialist at West Fraser, you will be integral in enhancing the automation and predictive controls capabilities (AI) of our OSB and lumber manufacturing network. You will provide vital remote technical support for daily operations and contribute to exciting new projects.
- Monitor critical devices, including electrical and mechanical components, circuitry, controls, robotics, and manufacturing machinery from our Greenville office, providing service, repair, and calibration assistance for multiple OSB and lumber mills.
- Analyze and troubleshoot system issues, supporting breakdown recovery and ensuring operational efficiency.
- Assist with the setup of new and replacement equipment.
- Provide programming support for process adjustments and streamline operations.
- Troubleshoot issues in close collaboration with onsite technicians.
- Manage and log system issues or requests for assistance from automated system monitors or mill staff.
- Support facility upgrades in alignment with enhanced automation and digitization standards, offering onsite support for infrastructure installation and commissioning.
- Implement and maintain West Fraser Analytics System (NAS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Model Predictive Control (MPC), and Rockwell ECO System across facilities.
In this role, you will also contribute to continuous improvement and project management objectives by:
- Developing PLC programs and HMIs that adhere to West Fraser standards and capital expense guidelines.
- Providing data support for project analysis and execution at the mill level.
- Configuring tags and templates to facilitate process data collection, trending, and reporting.
- Auditing changes within the mill automation environment.
- Keeping firmware and software revisions up to date.
- Supporting the Automation team as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- An Associate's degree or equivalent in Mechatronics, Industrial Electrical, Engineering Technology, or related fields, or extensive prior experience as a Technician, with strong programming and technical skills.
- A collaborative mindset, technological proficiency, and a willingness to learn.
- Experience with VMware ESX, virtualization, and other technology fundamentals is a plus.
- Skills in programming and troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers (preferably Rockwell ControlLogix).
- The ability to visualize physical processes to remotely assist field personnel in setup and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of programming languages such as VB, SQL, Python, or Json is favorable.
- A basic understanding of, or interest in, the OSB and lumber manufacturing process.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- The flexibility to work shifts and variable schedules to support a 24/7 manufacturing operation.
- The ability to work well both individually and as part of a team.
- A willingness to travel up to 20% to mill locations.
