The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Department of Neurological Surgery at Columbia University University Irving Medical Center seeks one Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) for an innovative academic practice who will enjoy working with a high volume multi-site Neurological spine surgery practice. This rapidly growing division offers collaborative practice opportunity to establish ambulatory care practice and participate in development of new clinical services in an Neurological spine surgery practice.
Responsibilities
Work independently or collaboratively with the Neurological spine surgery attendings, fellows, and resident staff as a well as the nurses, therapists, social workers and other support personnel who take part in caring for Neurological spine surgery patients. Care coordination for patients needing non-operative treatment. Assist in managing pre-operative care across other practitioners to optimize patients for surgery. Obtain relevant consultations from other services and follow up on the information. Peer-to-peer consults to obtain surgical pre-authorization for testing or surgeries for all spine surgical patients. Rounds independently and/or with attendings on all Neurological inpatients. Chart preparation according to protocol and orders appropriate x-rays for office hours using the Electronic Medical Record. Complies with Meaningful Use Measures. Evaluates and diagnoses patients. Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs. Administers injections/Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities. Monitors effectiveness of prescribed intervention. Remove/apply dressings, sutures, staples, slings and/or braces. See post-op patients for wound checks and post-op care and notify attending of findings if abnormal. Reviews post-operative discharge instructions with patients including regarding wound care and pain management. Returns patient phone messages at designated times throughout the day; documents action taken in the Electronic Medical Record (EPIC). Triage incoming telephone calls; instructs patient and family regarding treatment instruction, then documents action taken in the Electronic Medical Record (EPIC). Oversees appointment bookings and ensures emergency situations are scheduled appropriately. Sends patients prescription requests to pharmacy and documents action in the Electronic Medical Record (EPIC). Manage and oversee all spine attending in-basket tasks in EPIC. Fill out necessary forms, i.e. disability forms, workman’s comp, handicap parking as needed; Assist with patient correspondence as needed, i.e. letters of medical necessity, school notes, insurance inquiries, etc. Assist patients in meeting health needs by identifying potential or existing problems, exploring available. alternatives and providing support to the patient and family members to make an informed decision regarding health care. Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between healthcare settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, discharging and home care including visiting nurse referrals. Formulate patient care protocols and critical pathways. Assist with development; participate in design and implementation of clinical research trials. Participate in accordance with hospital policies. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Nurse Practitioners :
Master's degree in Nursing or equivalent in education, training, and experience. NYS RN and NP Licenses Board Certification. Current (or eligible for) New York State DEA license BLS Certified (ACLS optional). 4 years nursing or related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in management of adults with Neurological diseases in an Neurological spine practice CPR/AED Certification Experience with phlebotomy and spinal injections Bilingual (Spanish/English)
