The McLendon Clinical Laboratories Cytogenetics Lab is currently recruiting applicants for a per diem Cytogenetic Technologist position. Summary: This technologist will serve as a generalist within the Cytogenetics Laboratory. Duties may include specimen processing, short and long-term tissue culturing, slide preparation, microscope analysis, karyotyping, FISH and general lab duties, as needed. Excellent communication, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work in a team environment are essential. This technologist will support the goals of the McLendon Clinical Laboratories and UNC Health. Responsibilities: Investigate problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow. May participate on teams or perform special projects/assignments. May perform teaching of Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents and training of new employees. May serve as a technical resource. Performs quality control and equipment maintenance in the Cytogenetics laboratory. Performs routine and less standardized test procedures. Observes test and reactions and provides data. Prepares specimens and reagents, solutions, heat, or filters as required. Reports results to healthcare providers. Consults/confers with healthcare providers regarding test results. Reviews test results to ensure accuracy of report and timely correction of errors. Other Information: Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, a chemical science, biological science, or in Diagnostic Genetic Sciences Licensure/Certification Requirements: CG (ASCP) Board of Certification eligible (must be received within one year of hire date.) Professional Experience Requirements: If bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a chemical or biological science and completion of a NACCLS accredited Cytogenetics program, or completion of a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Genetic Sciences, then no experience is required. If bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a chemistry or biological science only, then one (1) year of experience required. Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
