Director, Data Governance
The Director, Data Governance will lead the design and implementation of a new enterprise-wide data governance function at ASU Enterprise Partners. This role is responsible for developing governance policies, procedures, and systems to ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and FERPA. The ideal candidate will have expertise in metadata management platforms like Collibra, Microsoft Purview, or Alation, and will oversee data use and processing agreements. They will collaborate with data leaders to align governance with analytics goals and build scalable systems for tracking data usage across repositories. The candidate should combine strategic vision with hands-on execution, work across technical and legal domains, and embrace emerging technologies like AI and machine learning.
What you'll do:
Design and launch a comprehensive data governance program supporting enterprise data integrity, security, and compliance.
Develop and implement policies, procedures, and frameworks for data stewardship, classification, access, and lifecycle management.
Establish data quality standards and monitoring processes for accuracy and reliability.
Lead the evaluation and administration of metadata management platforms such as Collibra, Microsoft Purview, or Alation.
Create systems to track data usage, lineage, and handling across repositories.
Draft and review data use and processing agreements in collaboration with legal and compliance teams.
Ensure compliance with GDPR, CCPA, FERPA, and other standards.
Collaborate with data, legal, IT, and business leaders to align governance with organizational strategies.
Promote data responsibility and literacy through training and stakeholder engagement.
Monitor emerging technologies to evolve governance practices and maintain innovation.
Manage execution independently, driving scalable governance solutions.
Lead and mentor a team, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
What you'll need:
Proven experience designing scalable governance systems in complex data environments.
Experience with metadata management platforms like Collibra, Purview, or Alation.
Knowledge of data cataloging, profiling, and lineage tracking.
Experience classifying sensitive and public data, ensuring proper handling.
Experience developing data quality frameworks.
Experience drafting and enforcing data management policies and SOPs.
Strong understanding of data privacy laws and compliance frameworks.
Experience managing data use and processing agreements.
Proficiency with documenting processes using tools like Confluence.
Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills.
Experience with data warehousing, ETL, and cloud analytics environments (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery).
Stakeholder engagement skills and ability to communicate complex concepts clearly.
Ability to prioritize and deliver high-impact projects independently.
Leadership skills to motivate and guide a team.
Relevant qualifications:
7+ years of experience in data governance, privacy, or related fields.
Bachelor's degree in information systems, data science, or related field.
Preferred education and experience:
Master’s degree or higher.
Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or DM-BOK.
Experience in higher education, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations.
Preferred skills and abilities:
Understanding of AI, machine learning, and their implications for data governance.
Experience with Agile, Scrum, or Lean methodologies in data projects.
