Job Summary
Dr. Hutcheson and Dr. Daoud Kinzie invite applications for Biochemistry I Lab (CHM 471) TA. Possible times include Tuesday 12:55-3:55 and Wednesday 09:15-12:15. In your cover letter for this application, please indicate both your availability and order of preference for these sections. The pay rate is $16.30 per hour. Thank you!
Core Duties The TA must be available during the scheduled period for the laboratory section. The TA is expected to plan ahead and be ready for what the students will be doing during each period. This includes reading the experiment description in the laboratory manual, and reviewing any concepts or techniques covered in the experiment. Each TA must satisfactorily complete the online TA safety training within the first two weeks of employment. Generally, the TA will assist the Instructor in teaching students how to safely and correctly perform all laboratory experiments, as well as help students understand the underlying concepts in chemistry. In addition, TAs may be asked to assist with grading. The TA must be able to help ensure that students taking the course are performing experiments using safe and authorized techniques, but must not tell students everything they need to do or do the work for them. The TA should know how to use equipment needed for the lab and how to help others use it. If the TA has any question regarding the safe use of any equipment or the safe performance of any experimental procedure, the TA is responsible for consulting the Instructor (or another member of the Chemistry faculty) to resolve these questions before instructing students. After the laboratory period is completed, the TA is expected to make sure that the laboratory is clean, all chemical solutions and other experiment-related materials are in their proper place, and waste bottles are capped and safely stored. In general, the laboratory must be ready for the next lab period. The TA is also responsible for preparing reagents, solutions, unknown samples, and other experiment-related materials under the supervision of the Laboratory Instructor. Extra hours are possible to help prepare for the semester, prepare for a major experiment, or help clean the lab, at the beginning and/or the end of the semester. Other relevant duties as assigned.
