The Role
Totei is looking for a Senior Editor to help shape our coverage
of the leading edge of culture. You’ll collaborate closely with the Editor-in-Chief, lead designer, and photo and social editors to make insightful and visually powerful stories that take readers deep inside the act of creation. You’ll have the opportunity to bring your refined and eclectic taste to bear on curating the sensibility of a new publication, with the time and space to work with great writers to create excellent stories. In addition to being a superb story editor, you’ll also bring endless ideas and the capacity to multitask and pivot to the needs of an evolving new magazine. Responsibilities: Assign, edit and elevate feature-length profiles of notable cultural figures Oversee monthly calendar of regular shortform story formats Craft clear, compelling headlines and display copy that align with Totei’s voice and vision Collaborate with EIC, photo editor, designer and social media editor to create arresting multimedia stories across platforms Uphold and enforce editorial standards, including fact-checking, tone consistency, attribution, and accuracy across all published content Supervise and mentor a staff writer, providing editorial feedback and helping shape their voice and growth within the magazine Story Development and Voice Identify and commission exceptional freelance writers across disciplines and perspectives Pitch and shape original, thoughtful, and culturally resonant stories Help conceive ambitious and original photography, multimedia, and social media treatments Collaborate with the EIC on the ongoing evolution of Totei’s editorial tone, standards, and priorities Qualifications: 3+ years of editing experience in journalism, including feature-length profiles A strong network of writers, editors, and creative contributors Excellent editorial judgment and a confident, distinctive point of view on culture and trends Self-starter capable of taking initiative in entrepreneurial environment Preferred qualifications Track record of shepherding stories from pitch to publish under tight deadlines while sustaining narrative excellence Experience working with photo editors, stylists and publicists on celebrity profiles A prolific source of original, compelling editorial ideas across formats and platforms A personal fascination with artistic process, design, or craftsmanship Prior experience launching or helping scale a new publication or editorial product Salary Range:
