is a fast-growing, PE-backed, post-Series A company scaling two dynamic brands: Pet Benefit Solutions and Shepherd Veterinary Solutions in the vet/pet wellness and technology space. As we expand our digital infrastructure and explore new opportunities, we’re hiring a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead our technology vision, drive innovation, and ensure execution at scale. We’re building best-in-class products with ambitious goals, and need a technical leader who can deliver them with velocity, within scope, and within budget. The Role Synergy’s CTO will oversee the full technology stack across both Pet Benefit Solutions and Shepherd. This a strategic and hands-on role that will set the long-term technology vision, while also making sure teams are executing with urgency and quality today. Our CTO will collaborate deeply with core product teams, champion an AI-first mindset grounded in real-world applications, and set a high bar for identifying where emerging technologies (e.g., generative AI, machine learning, and automation) will drive product innovation and operational leverage. Our engineering team is currently entirely in Eastern Europe, ~50 people—almost all in a single location. While this role does not include direct reports initially, it will be critical to shape and influence how these teams operate — improving: velocity, accountability, and product quality in the near term. As SPG grows, the CTO will likely hire U.S.-based specialists and team leaders to support scale and innovate. Our Tech Environment We operate two modern, cloud-native platforms — Shepherd and Pet Benefit Solutions — built for scale, speed, and resilience. Key highlights: Backend : Monolithic .NET architecture with select microservices for modular functionality Frontend : React (Shepherd) and Angular (PBS) for dynamic, intuitive user interfaces Hosting : Multi-region AWS environments with Amazon RDS as the primary database CI/CD : Mature pipelines enabling fast, reliable, and consistent deployments Messaging : Twilio + SendGrid (Shepherd) and AWS SES (PBS) for secure, scalable communication Engineering Philosophy : Pragmatic approach focused on balancing speed, stability, and a seamless user experience Collaboration : Strong cross-functional alignment between engineering, product, and customer-facing teams What You’ll Accomplish In the First 6–12 Months: Own the Full Tech Stack: Take responsibility for the systems powering our brands, ensuring they are stable, scalable, and forward-compatible. Deliver High-Quality Products: Build strong operating rhythms with product and business teams to deliver features and infrastructure on time, in scope, and in budget. AI Integration: Lead exploration and deployment of AI capabilities across our brands—including LLM-based features in our SaaS platform, automation of internal workflows, and AI-enhanced customer insights. Identify pragmatic use cases where AI can accelerate value and deliver speed and precision. Engineering Accountability: Work closely with offshore teams to improve delivery of outcomes, increasing speed, improving quality, and aligning execution to business priorities. Data Infrastructure Readiness: Build the foundation for data monetization, ensuring we have secure, reliable pipelines and systems for future commercial use. Technical Strategy: Define a technology roadmap that scales with the business, supports innovation, and ensures platform resilience across both brands. Org Design & Leadership Hiring: Build the right team over time, including key VP roles. Cross-Functional Partnership: Operate as a trusted partner to product, ops, and commercial leaders — helping turn strategy into executable, scalable systems. Cultural Leadership: Foster a high performing culture of innovation, feedback, and engagement — raising the bar and supporting teams in exceeding them. You Might Be a Fit If You: Have scaled a startup or growth-stage company through periods of rapid evolution. Have led or worked closely with distributed engineering teams (especially offshore) and know how to raise performance without bloating process. Can be deeply hands-on and comfortable bridging strategic planning with execution, especially where resources are lean. Are a committed AI advocate — fluent in emerging capabilities and excited to apply them pragmatically into scalable product features and ops. Have meaningful exposure to data strategy — particularly in building infrastructure that enables analytics, insights, or monetization. Thrive in hybrid environments and are eager to spend time building culture and alignment in our New Jersey HQ.
