Ops Biological Scientist II
This is a full-time other personal services (Ops) position with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Florida Forest Service. The position is based at Jennings State Forest headquarters with occasional to moderate travel required. The position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.
Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in biological, physical, natural, or agricultural sciences and one (1) year of related professional experience; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university as described above. Certain positions within this class require individuals to meet specific federal or state regulations as identified by the employing agency. Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.
Job duties include working on habitat monitoring and restoration projects on five state forests across the Jacksonville district. The candidate will work closely with the District Biological Scientist III, various Florida Forest Service staff and will also be required to conduct fieldwork independently without direct supervision. The incumbent will have familiarity with Florida ecosystems and have experience in conducting various species surveys. Fieldwork will be conducted during all times of year and the candidate should be prepared to work in Florida weather. The biologist will have the ability to work effectively with cooperators, volunteers, and contractors through good written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity with GPS and GIS and their use in tracking and documenting data. Knowledge in the use of applications such as Field Maps and Avenza are recommended. This is largely a field-oriented position but will also assist in data processing and grant writing.
