At Strategic Mission Critical, we are more than just engineers; we are experts focusing solely on mission critical facilities. Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape.
With a rapidly expanding market and the anticipated increase in demand driven by AI advancements, SMC is at the forefront of industry growth. We offer not just jobs, but career paths that reward innovation and expertise. If you want to work alongside highly skilled professionals with years of mission critical experience, then we want you to be part of a team that works on major projects for top-tier data center providers. Your work will ensure the resilience and efficiency of data infrastructure that millions depend on.
SMC is actively looking for a Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer/Designer to execute mechanical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, design of fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and various system calculations.
This candidate shall be capable of executing basic mechanical design projects independently, taking established design criteria through to design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. The candidate shall also be capable of serving as a key contributor within a larger mechanical design team on large and/or complex mission critical projects under the guidance of a senior engineer. The mechanical design scope will be part of a broader project, and this candidate should be capable of interfacing with design leads within SMC (electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as externally including architectural, civil, and structural teams.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable mentoring recent graduates and junior designers and engineers, reviewing others' work, and collaborating with senior engineers to implement broad project goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This candidate will have the opportunity to execute mechanical design for various project types while working and coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines, as well as serve as the daily lead on smaller projects. The candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and clients while meeting scheduled project deadlines.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents.
Perform airside and hydronic calculations for multiple mechanical systems.
Understand and develop hydronic & air flow diagrams for various system types.
Select and specify HVAC equipment.
Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
Understand local and construction codes and project specifications to develop a broader understanding of the construction process.
Have experience with Microsoft tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
Be willing and able to travel when required to project sites (approximately 10-20%).
Communicate clearly in both written and spoken forms.
Lead junior engineers, designers, and modelers, and coordinate tasks of small project teams to execute specific design elements.
Mentor and train junior engineers, designers, and modelers to develop mechanical design knowledge.
Maintain excellent organizational skills, managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
QUALIFICATIONS
4-year degree in mechanical engineering or architectural engineering with a mechanical focus. 2-year degrees and MET degrees with work experience will be considered.
Minimum 4 years of experience in facility HVAC design, particularly using Autodesk Revit.
Experience in mechanical design for larger industrial and commercial buildings, with experience in mission critical design a plus.
Experience across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of submittals, shop drawings, and fieldwork such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists.
Experience leading small mechanical design teams and some client interface experience.
Experience with construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
Basic understanding of controls for mechanical systems is a plus.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
