The Patient Care Technician’s primary function is to assist and support the Professional Registered Nurse in all aspects of direct and indirect patient care activities. The Patient Care Technician functions as a member of the unit staff under the direction and supervision of the professional Registered Nurse. Responsibilities Direct Patient Care Activities Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge processes. Takes and records temperature, pulse, respirations, weight for adults and/or neonates, height, and blood pressure. Measures and records intake and output including output from drains. Applies cardiac monitor/oximetry and obtains EKG. Adheres to the infant security protocol (accurate assessment of band placement). Performs newborn hearing screening and obtains capillary blood glucose for adults and/or neonates. Performs phlebotomy and applies Fetal Monitor equipment on pregnant patients. Discontinues heplocks and foley catheters, administers enemas, and collects specimens (urine, stool, blood, sputum). Makes rounds, anticipates patient needs, and observes newborns in the nursery. Responds promptly to call lights, especially emergency lights. Distributes water and nourishments, assists with feeding, and provides morning and evening care. Provides newborn care, makes beds, ambulates patients, and instructs on walker, cane, and crutch walking. Assists with pre-and post-operative care, applies safety measures, and transports patients and equipment. Responds to emergency situations, secures assistance, and initiates basic life support. Documents observations and notifies RN of any changes. Performs post-mortem care and manages prosthetic devices and personal items. Indirect Patient Care Maintains a safe, clean environment and performs duties delegated by RN. Collects and inventories patient belongings, completes charges, orders supplies, and ensures room readiness. Checks equipment, stocks linen, participates in meetings, and quality activities. Participates in orientation and demonstrates the “Patient’s First” philosophy. Qualifications Required: CNA Certification or current enrollment in SON with clinical rotations completed. CPR certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for Healthcare Providers). Minimum of 90% on annual mandatory Health and Safety Training quizzes. Recognition for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring. High school diploma; college or nursing education preferred. Previous healthcare experience preferred. Physical demands include lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. Preferred: Associates or Bachelor’s degree.
