Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- CNAs shall perform essentially the same duties, as those required of any military or government civil service nursing assistant of similar experience and within the skill set of accepted practice to include inpatient psychiatry. This list of duties is not intended to establish either a maximum or minimum acceptable level of effort or be an inclusive listing of anticipated duties. Workload includes either scheduled or emergency requirements for care according to standards.
- Anticipated duties:
- Documentation and Record-Keeping
- Ensures accurate and timely medical documentation in compliance with BAMC policies.
- Manually and/or electronically records all patient care activities and patient status.
- Completes documentation within 72 hours in the patient's medical record.
- Patient Assessment and Monitoring
- Verifies patient identifiers for safety and accuracy.
- Performs, monitors, and records vital signs.
- Obtains and records patient height and weight.
- Monitors and records intake and output (I&O)
- Observes patients for distress or changes in condition and reports abnormalities to appropriate Physician, LVN and/or RN.
- Patient Care
- Assists in providing patients with basic and general information regarding self-care and therapy (i.e., activity level, diet and fluid intake, etc.) to ensure compliance with physician's orders.
- Dispenses ice water and meal trays to patients.
- Perform a range of personal care tasks including bathing, feeding, lifting, turning, ambulating, and providing oral, hair, skin, and related hygiene care.
- Checks IV infusion sites for complications
- Applies and monitors hot and cold packs as prescribed.
- Performs daily quality control checks on glucose test monitor.
- Collects or assists in the collection of specimens such as fecal occult blood and urine.
- Assists health care provider in examinations/procedures such as physical exams, X-rays, lumbar punctures, biopsies, PAP/Pelvic examinations etc.
- Assists in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
- Transports patients within BAMC for tests, procedures, or appointments.
- Provide general information to patients and visitors regarding hospital policies and directions.
- Reinforces instructions provided by professional staff. Provides patients/visitors with general information regarding unit and hospital policies, directions to lab, X-ray, etc.
- Cares for patients in isolation.
- Assists in orientation/precepting of newly assigned personnel.
- Assist with administrative tasks.
- Sets up and stamps component parts of patients' records, files lab/X-ray slips and other documents in prescribed order. Records observations and other pertinent data on appropriate records (i.e., nursing notes, I&O records, etc.).
- Assistsin the general maintenance of the unit and patient care equipment (cleans instruments, equipment, patient units and work areas; sorts and stores supplies, linen, equipment; disposes of trash and soiled linen; restocks medical forms).
- Equipment monitoring and assistance.
- 100% Performs other duties as assigned within skill set.

- Reports potential/actual problems to physician, LVN, or RN for appropriate action.
- Maintains clear and effective professional communication with the healthcare team, staff, patients, and visitors.
- Work cooperatively with the multidisciplinary team.
- Safety and Infection Control
- Maintains a clean patient environment.
- Exercises the universal precautions set forth by the Centers for Disease Control when providing direct patient care and/or indirect patient care involving possible exposure to contaminated items at BAMC.
- Observe, correct, or report potential/actual safety hazards.
- Recognize and initiate appropriate measures in emergency situations.
- Exercise universal precautions for infection control.
- Abide by BAMC safety and infection control policies and procedures.
- Safety and Infection Control
- CNAs assigned to the inpatient units may rotate between performing as an Individual Care Provider (ICP) (one to one patient care), Remote Patient Safety Attendant (RPSA) (remote monitoring in Telemetry Room), or assigned to unit to assist nursing care teams.
- CNAs shall provide age-specific care based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the inpatient wards and outpatient clinics; health care provider's orders; the physical, mental and emotional needs of the patient; and the policies and procedures of BAMC.
- Shall utilize comprehensive knowledge of workload requirements in conjunction with knowledge of the composition and capabilities of assigned staff, to distribute/redistribute personnel resources in response to unforeseen patient care needs.
- Attends and participates in patient nursing reports, patient care conferences, team/unit/clinic conferences, discharge planning, and staff conferences as deemed appropriate by administrative officials.
- Demonstrates the ability to manage interpersonal relationships and maintains composure and reacts appropriately while relating to patients and families; manages distraught, irritable, unreasonable or angry individuals; and to maintain a positive rapport with all individuals involved in patient care.
- Demonstrates the ability to react with alertness and skill in any emergency, e.g., cardiac or respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, shock, severe physical trauma and psychiatric reaction, Initiates life saving measures in the absence of a physician, depending on position and protocol, may serve as member of resuscitation or emergency code team. Assesses patients' conditions for potential or life-threatening crises and distinguishes between normal and abnormal physical findings; initiates life saving measures in the absence of a physician.
- Shall be capable of emergency equipment operation: defibrillator, EKG machine, cardiac monitor, fire extinguisher, and other equipment as determined by MTF, unit/clinic, and position.
- Shall provide high-quality customer service/customer satisfaction. CNAs shall not have more than two substantiated complaints in any twelve-month period. CNAs shall not have more than two error and untimely reports each month, which were caused by inaccurate or late reporting.
- Completion of a state-approved CNA program successfully passed state exam and registered in the Nursing Assistant Registry whose qualifications have been examined and certified by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support Training. All contractor HCWs must possess and maintain current course completion documentation for basic life support (BLS) through an American Heart Association or Red Cross approved training program.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in the last two years in the required specialty under supervision of a Physician, LVN and/or RN.
- Must maintain a current, active, valid and unrestricted/unencumbered certification or authorizing document from any U.S. state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory or jurisdiction to provide healthcare within the skill set for a specific health care discipline.
