The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has a twofold mission of preservation and education, and was incorporated in 1923 to preserve Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Today, the Foundation seeks to bring history forward into national and global dialogues by engaging audiences with Jefferson's world and ideas and sharing the history of everyone who lived and labored at Monticello. Monticello is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a United Nations World Heritage Site and a Site of Conscience.
FT Shuttle Bus Driver (Tues-Sat (or possibly Sun-Thurs), 5 days, hours vary)
Purpose:
Shuttle bus drivers ensure safe, reliable, efficient, and guest friendly transportation services to and from the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center, Monticello, and Montalto and around the geographic area as necessary. Drivers serve as a superior guest service provider, offering friendly and informative exchanges with our visitors.

Purpose:
Shuttle bus drivers ensure safe, reliable, efficient, and guest friendly transportation services to and from the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center, Monticello, and Montalto and around the geographic area as necessary. Drivers serve as a superior guest service provider, offering friendly and informative exchanges with our visitors.
We will look to you to:
- Perform daily safety and mechanical inspections of the shuttle buses to include pre- and post-trip inspections, refueling and maintaining bus fluid levels.
- Deliver superior guest services.
- Thoroughly clean bus interiors post-trip per cleaning protocols and physically maintain the shuttle buses, creating a professional, neat appearance. May need to use disinfectants as necessary.
- Report safety, mechanical, and cleaning supply inventory issues to the Transportation Team Leader or Manager of Transportation.
- Greet visitors in a polite, welcoming manner and answer questions professionally.
- Always operate the shuttle bus and ADA lift in a safe manner, fully complying with all Monticello, commercial driver's license, and federal department of transportation rules and regulations.
- Manage parking lot traffic per request.
- Drive for special events as needed and required.
- Always maintain a neat and professional appearance.
- Assist in logistical support for special events, which may include evenings.
- Drive on public highways and diverse traffic conditions to provide transportation services for VIPS, staff, and guests of the Foundation as needed.
- Crosstrain and assist with other departments as needed.
- Commercial Driver's License with a passenger endorsement.
- Ability to operate a 25-passenger shuttle bus in a safe manner
- Ability to use basic automotive cleaning supplies and equipment
- Muse be able to complete pre- and post-trip safety inspections, as well as safety and mechanical inspection.
- Knowledge of Monticello, Commercial Driver's License, and federal department of transportation rules and regulations.
- Basic bus mechanical knowledge needed to assist in describing problems and assisting in diagnosis.
- Safe driving record (verifiable)
- Exemplary guest service skills
- Must be able to pass random drug tests.
- Ability to interact with diverse populations.
- Basic knowledge of tourism industry and local attractions.
- Knowledge of Jefferson and Monticello or the willingness and ability to learn.
- Professional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Weekend work required, including holidays.
- Evening and after hours required for special events.
- Must be able to drive and be outdoors during inclement weather conditions.
- Must be flexible to work in and cross train with other departments as needed, especially during the slow season (November - February).
- Must be physically able to perform cleaning procedures as well as pre- and post-trip bus check, which include getting on an off bus, bending, stooping, and kneeling frequently.
- Must always adhere to the Foundation dress code requirements.
- Must be able to drive in inclement weather conditions.
