Job Description
GIS Engineer
SUMMARY The role of GIS Engineer is responsible for leveraging geographic information systems (GIS) expertise to support the planning, design, implementation, and management of telecommunication infrastructure. This position involves acquiring, analyzing, and managing spatial data related to network assets, conducting spatial analysis to optimize network performance and resource allocation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Managing spatial data related to telecommunication networks, such as cell tower locations, fiber optic cable routes, coverage areas, and service boundaries. • Analyzing spatial data to identify patterns, trends, and potential areas for network optimization or expansion. Creating maps and visualizations to communicate findings to stakeholders. • Using GIS software to assist in the planning and design of telecommunication networks. This includes determining optimal locations for new infrastructure, such as cell towers or network nodes, to maximize coverage and minimize interference. • Maintaining accurate records of telecommunication infrastructure assets, including their location, condition, and capacity. This helps ensure efficient maintenance and upgrade activities. • Conducting spatial analysis to identify suitable sites for new infrastructure deployment, taking into account factors such as population density, terrain, land use regulations, and environmental considerations. • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements related to telecommunication infrastructure placement and environmental impact assessments. This may involve obtaining permits and approvals for new construction projects. • Supporting emergency response and disaster management efforts by providing spatial data and analysis to identify critical infrastructure, assess vulnerabilities, and plan response activities. • Integrating GIS data with other systems, such as network management systems (NMS) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems, to facilitate data sharing and decision-making across the organization. • Providing training and support to other team members or stakeholders on GIS software and tools, as well as best practices for spatial data management and analysis. • Staying updated on advancements in GIS technology and methodologies and exploring innovative ways to apply GIS techniques to improve telecommunication network planning, design, and management. • Complete additional tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS • High School Diploma, or equivalent education, required. • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. • Previous experience working with GIS in a professional setting, preferably in the telecommunications industry or a related field. • Experience with GIS data collection, data management, spatial analysis, and cartographic design. • Familiarity with telecommunication infrastructure and network planning concepts is advantageous. • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail for conducting spatial analysis, troubleshooting GIS issues, and resolving data discrepancies. • Ability to identify and solve complex spatial problems using GIS tools and methodologies • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
PREFERRED SKILLS • Professional certifications related to GIS, such as Esri Technical Certification, GISCI (GIS Certification Institute) certification, or industry-specific certifications (e.g., Telecom GIS Specialist). • Working knowledge of the telecommunication industry. • Willingness to stay updated on emerging GIS technologies, trends, and best practices through self learning, professional development opportunities, and participation in GIS communities and forums. • Adaptability to new tools, methodologies, and project requirements in a dynamic and evolving GIS landscape.
ADDITIONAL NOTES • Position is primarily office-based position with occasional field work.
