ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Special Counsel for Technology and Data Privacy in the Corporate Counsel’s Office of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY . This is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The ACLU leverages outside contractors to supplement its staff, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws to maintain its tax-exempt status and support its advocacy, litigation, and fundraising efforts. The Office of Corporate Counsel supports these activities by drafting contracts, creating compliance programs, and providing staff training to uphold high standards of professional conduct.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Reporting to the Co-Chief Corporate Counsel, the Special Counsel for Technology and Data Privacy will manage the team’s practice related to technology and data privacy, supervise two team members, and coordinate with the Privacy and Data Governance (P&DG) team.
YOUR DAY-TO-DAY
- Manage the team’s legal practice concerning data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, and technology, including:
- Contracting for technology tools and services
- Ensuring compliance with data privacy, security, and consumer protection laws (e.g., state data privacy laws, CAN-SPAM, TCPA)
- Adhering to industry standards like PCI-DSS and mobile carrier rules
- Preparing for and responding to data breaches
- Supervise Senior and Associate Corporate Counsels for Technology and Data Privacy.
- Coordinate work with Chief Privacy Officer, Chief Information and Security Officer, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the Chief Privacy Officer to set goals and responsibilities.
- Provide legal advice to P&DG as needed.
- Review, draft, and negotiate complex software and technology service contracts.
- Represent Corporate Counsel on cross-departmental strategic teams.
- Develop and facilitate training on vendor management and data privacy laws.
- Work with outside counsel when necessary.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admitted to practice in New York.
- 10+ years of corporate law experience, including data privacy, security laws, and technology contracts.
- Knowledge of consumer protection laws.
- Strong communication, research, and briefing skills.
- Ability to handle confidential matters and make independent decisions.
- Experience mentoring junior attorneys.
- Excellent time management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience conducting compliance training for non-legal staff.
- Familiarity with non-profit law and environments.
