Onward Search is a specialized staffing and talent solutions company that helps professionals find top jobs with the nation’s leading brands. We’re looking to hire a Sr. Java Backend Developer for a remote opportunity based in New York, NY. This is a 6-month contract opportunity.
You’ll join the Messaging Platform & Tooling team at a leading digital media and technology company to build and maintain backend services that power high-volume communications like email, push notifications, and in-app messaging. You’ll work in a collaborative, innovative environment that emphasizes engineering best practices and continuous improvement. This role requires candidates to work EST hours.
There is no application deadline for this role.
Sr. Java Backend Developer Responsibilities:
Develop, maintain, and debug backend services using Java (and some Scala).
Build distributed, scalable, cloud-native systems on GCP, AWS, or Azure.
Lead technical initiatives and drive engineering best practices.
Use Linux environments, monitoring, and metrics for continuous delivery and support.
Participate in cross-functional collaboration with other engineering and product teams.
Mentor team members and facilitate continuous improvement in engineering processes.
Sr. Java Backend Developer Qualifications: 5+ years of backend development experience with Java.
Experience in designing, architecting, and maintaining Java-based software systems.
Exposure to Scala is a plus.
Experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
Familiar with operability practices: logging, monitoring, metrics, and Linux-based environments.
Strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, data structures, and algorithms.
Familiar with agile, TDD, CI/CD, and defensive programming.
Prior experience in coaching, leading initiatives, and stakeholder alignment is a plus.
