Job Description Summary:
The Structural Engineer helps to successfully design and deliver projects for the Self Perform group as part of a wider team of professionals, aligning with the project goals and the design intent from the Owner. They manage the design process, ensuring timely and quality design deliverables, and help to manage the Owner’s expectations. Design Managers are responsible for creating a strategic design plan and executing it to ensure a successful design phase and transition to construction.
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform all essential Assistant Preconstruction Manager/Lead Estimator responsibilities.
- Plan, direct, and monitor all aspects of the design process from initial concept to final design, coordinating with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to meet scope, budget, and schedule requirements.
- Assist in hiring, training, and developing team members and project teams.
- Assist in proposal preparation, participate in interviews and client presentations as needed.
- Strategize with pursuit and preconstruction teams to determine appropriate design levels for pursuit pricing and ensure design solutions align with the approach.
- Assist with selecting A/E teams, negotiating agreements and fees, and coordinating contract terms for Design-Build and Design-Assist projects.
- Develop RFPs for A/E, consultants, and trade partners.
- Coordinate design services to avoid scope overlaps and manage third-party reviews.
- Define, schedule, and monitor design deliverables, ensuring compliance with requirements, schedule, and codes.
- Conduct owner design reviews, obtain approvals, and facilitate project milestones.
- Lead constructability reviews and value management sessions to optimize costs and materials.
- Coordinate BIM workflows and develop project-specific BIM execution plans.
- Resolve design-related issues with subcontractors and facilitate communication between teams.
- Develop and maintain relationships with clients, subcontractors, and partners for future pursuits.
- Complete other assigned responsibilities.
Minimum Requirements:
- Structural Engineering Degree
- 7-10 years of field construction management experience
- DBIA Certification preferred
- Experience with design-build delivery, understanding of construction contracts, project management systems, and sustainable construction techniques.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, VDC, and BIM software.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (Structural PE) in California.
Additional Technical Needs:
Drywall:
- Knowledge of light gauge steel framing, capable of stamping drawings.
- Experience developing shop drawings and understanding load-bearing steel stud systems.
Concrete:
- Ability to design and seal formwork, perform inspections, and conduct static analysis for various concrete structures.
- Experience with temporary foundations, equipment anchorage, and value engineering analysis.
