Overview
The Emission architect will have the following responsibilities:
Lead the aftertreatment system architecture definition and prototype hardware selection discussions during pre-development and supplier studies
Lead the pre-development and pre-Design Milestone testing for catalyst and emissions technologies
Track status, targets and timing within the program's emissions and KPI's requirements frame
Lead issue resolution teams to address emissions gaps identified during development
Main accountabilities:
Lead the technical teams embedded into technical KPI's and pre-development deliverables involved in the early emission systems development for approval governance milestones
Full understanding of catalyst efficiency and capabilities to manage and address calibration gaps and software requirements
Coordinate the aftertreatment architecture definition and hardware selection process during pre-development phase with catalyst integration, engine systems, core and base and vehicle calibration group
Responsibility for steering pre-development activities as needed by projects.
Lead pre-Design Milestone product co-development with suppliers
Approve and support Pre-Development testing direction
Ownership of each program's aftertreatment targets and status decks, including the Emissions Systems KPI
Tracking status, targets and timing for program duration in coordination with DRE, typically responsibly is handed over to DRE and lead calibration
Center of Excellence (CoE) Task: Responsibility to provide guidance to CoEs from results derived from pre-dev activities for enhancing requirements
CoE Task: Responsibility to provide guidance to assist portfolio planning (Long Range Plan rollout)
This position will report directly to Emissions and Aftertreatment Manager and operate under the general direction of the Technical Fellow and department Director.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelors of Science degree in Applied Physics, Automotive, Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or greater
5+ years of accumulated experience and systems level engineering skills with hardware, controls, or calibration development in the following areas: port fueled and direct injection spark ignition engines, powertrain systems, OBD, emissions systems, and virtual analysis - modeling/simulation (e.g., GT-Power, AVL Boost, Axi-Suite and/or similar tools) and appropriate application to simplify HW testing
Experience analyzing and running various emissions global test cycles and various test cell environments as well as experience using common PT data acquisition systems such as INCA, CAS, AVL Concerto, TCKs, INTECRIO, etc.
Working level understanding of key combustion processes, engine HW, thermal system, transmission system, OBD system and electrified propulsion systems
Knowledge of interactions / trade-offs between emissions, OBD, fuel economy, cost, drivability, and NVH
Able to quickly identify, root cause, and refine calibrations to improve emissions system performance and capable of providing simple explanations of complex systems / solutions
Experience with Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) proactive engineering methods
Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and strong problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to effectively operate both independently and as part of a team
Self-motivated and proactive with strong project management skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Automotive Engineering from an ABET accredited university
8+ years of accumulated experience and systems level engineering skills with hardware, controls, or calibration development in the following areas: port fueled and direct injection spark ignition engines, powertrain systems, OBD, emissions systems, and virtual analysis - modeling/simulation (e.g., GT-Power, AVL Boost, Axi-Suite and/or similar tools) and appropriate application to simplify HW testing
High technical and practical understanding of dyno and vehicle level testing and emissions measurement equipment including more advanced measurement systems such as particle size measurement
Experience with SW tools such as: AVL Boost, Axi-Suite, GT-Power, DOE optimization tools (ETAS-ASCMO), Lab-view, Matlab/Simulink/State-flow, calibration tools (ETAS-INCA, ATI) to create functional models / trend analysis and how to request modifications to models
Thorough understanding of current and emerging global emissions regulations
Outstanding problem-solving skills: experience using DoE / Proactive DFSS techniques
In-depth knowledge of emissions system architectures and various hardware & control strategies to meet emissions regulations at various levels of stringency including good understanding of new low emissions technologies: secondary air, GPFs, EGR, Port Flaps, EHCs, Exhaust sensors, wastegate design, etc.
Systems level engineering skills covering engine HW, controls, hot end and catalyst HW (DI fuel injection, boosting, in-cylinder combustion, catalyst substrate, wash-coat, and PGM design approaches)
Experience calibrating and releasing production level emissions calibrations including control strategy development
Skilled in post processing, organizing, analyzing and presenting technical findings to immediate and senio r management
