The Role
The Australian Government has a focus on supporting Australian businesses to diversify exports and grow in new markets. The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) is seeking an experienced Trade Director to join its US Critical Technology team. You will be based in the Austrade office in Chicago, San Francisco or New York City.
This role will be focused on delivering targeted and high impact business development support to Australian technology businesses who are looking to enter or grow in the US market. You will deliver core trade services to Australian companies which may include providing advice on market entry and growth strategies, facilitating introductions to industry, customers and partners, and providing bespoke support that results in clients achieving trade outcomes for Australia such as revenue growth and winning new contracts.
As part of this role, you will work closely with peak industry bodies to deliver a program of activities that support the diversification of Australian exporters into new markets and helps exporters to grow in established markets. You will manage and support the delivery of in-market trade events and business missions, working closely with Austrade’s Critical Technology team. You will be expected to leverage your local market expertise to raise awareness of new export opportunities amongst target Australian businesses.
This role sits within Austrade’s Critical Technology sector team which focuses on areas such as quantum technologies, cyber security, artificial intelligence, and sensing and automation technologies. Expertise in these areas will be highly valued in this role. You will be required to work with team members across North America and in Australia, assisting with trade clients and sector stakeholders.
The successful candidate will possess initiative, attention to detail and excellent communication and time management skills. Applicants must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the technology ecosystem, an understanding of tech trends and the strategies through which tech-enabled scaleups can best place themselves to grow into a new market. Applicants must also demonstrate an active network within the US tech sector in their local area and in the key technology areas outlined.
Duties include
Responsible for contributing to team KPIs and meeting individual KPIs, by assisting Australian companies to achieve commercial results in the US. Manage a targeted portfolio of Australian clients from the Critical Technologies sector and grow Australia’s exports to the market by providing trade advice to these clients. Leverage your deep US technology network to identify partners and customers for Australian clients; and continuously grow this network to support future connections. Identify opportunities for Australian businesses by leveraging local market expertise and undertaking sector research. Plan and support visits to the market by Australian businesses, helping to design visit programs that deliver trade outcomes and foster new business linkages. Work collaboratively within the Austrade network to contribute to service delivery and achieve desired outcomes, including by maintaining a strong connection with Austrade’s Australia-based staff. Uphold a best practice approach to client servicing, and embrace Austrade’s digital approach to client service delivery. Ensure a strong working relationship with other Australian government agencies in the market including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and state and territory government agencies. Establish and maintain close working relationships with targeted peak industry bodies, working closely with Austrade’s Australia-based team. Work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a positive working environment by living Austrade’s values; Generosity of Spirit, Innovation, Transparency and Collaboration. Apply Austrade business practices and maintain accuracy of information in all Austrade business systems to deliver accurate and timely reporting and effective relationship management. Maintain Austrade standards and policies, including diversity in the workplace, ethical practice and occupational health and safety principles and compliance with audit requirements.

To be eligible for consideration and appointment you must have:
Work Authorisation - to be eligible for employment with Austrade in the USA, candidates must be legally authorised to live and work in the USA at the time of appointment. Language - the successful candidate must be a highly motivated team member, fluent in written and spoken English. Security Clearance - the successful applicant must be willing to complete an Entry Level Screening Pack and be confirmed as a suitable person to access Government resources prior to commencement in the
role.
