Mission of the Department Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine at VCU has a strong history of research and scholarship focused on family medicine practice and education. It is the birthplace of the North American Primary Care Research Group ( https://www.napcrg.org/ ) and was home to its founder, Dr. Maurice Wood. Our research team adopts a multidisciplinary approach, involving fields such as family medicine, health services, biostatistics, epidemiology, cultural anthropology, social and behavioral sciences, and public health. Our research aims to improve quality in primary care, focusing on health behaviors, information technology, and care systems. We conduct innovative, multidisciplinary research on the interface of behavior and physiology, integrating social, psychological, and biological approaches to understand health and illness across the lifespan. Our programs include aging, cancer prevention and control, and mental health. The department is home to the Virginia Ambulatory Care Outcomes Research Network (ACORN), a respected practice-based research network with over 90 practices across Virginia. Chief Purpose of the Position The Vice Chair will lead, manage, and oversee the department's research and scholarship efforts, reporting to the Chair. Duties and Responsibilities Foster a department environment that values diverse research and scholarship across clinical, translational, practice-based, community, and educational domains. Advocate for and oversee research and scholarship program improvements. Support, coach, and develop research efforts within the department. Advise on research priorities, funding, recruitment, and infrastructure needs. Develop and manage budgets for research initiatives. Collaborate with university and hospital leaders to promote research initiatives. Encourage collaboration and coordination across training sites. Develop new initiatives aligned with departmental values. Ensure compliance with research standards and policies. Support trainee-focused research programs, ensuring safety and well-being. Oversee research activities, including securing infrastructure support and mentoring faculty. Participate in recruiting clinician researchers. Mentor faculty interested in family medicine research. Represent the department on university and hospital committees related to research. Hold regular research team meetings. Required Qualifications Eligibility for medical licensure in Virginia. Completion of an accredited Family Medicine residency. Board certification by the American Board of Family Medicine. 3-5 years of experience in family medicine research and scholarship. Proven funding success. Experience leading research teams. Experience providing care to underserved populations. Willingness to care for outpatients. Commitment to fostering diversity among faculty, staff, and students. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading diverse research teams. Experience managing departmental budgets. Ability to coordinate multiple research projects. Recognition as a national thought leader in primary care. Established relationships with primary care and multidisciplinary researchers.
