The Workers’ Compensation Manager (WC) is responsible for all WC-related claims management, including proactive management of WC claims to accelerate claim closure, mitigate risks, and manage financial exposure.
The ideal candidate has experience adjusting workers’ compensation lost time and medical only claims in an insurance company, third party administrator (TPA), or self-insured/high-deductible employer environment. This position ensures compliance with applicable WC state laws, NDCP policies and procedures related to on-the-job injuries and collaborates with the Company’s Leave Administrator to support compliance with WC, FMLA, and ADA integration.
Responsibilities
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as the primary liaison in managing the Company’s WC third-party administrator (TPA), ensuring quarterly performance / quality reviews are completed.
Liaison with NDCP’s Safety Managers, HR leadership, third-party broker representative and TPA claim adjusters in setting / maintaining appropriate claim reserves.
Establish and maintain appropriate medical care provider panels and directories in all states where NDCP operates, ensuring an appropriate level of care and service is maintained in all operational areas.
Manage all WC vendor management to include the selection and maintenance of outside vendors for agreed upon services and fees for specific claim management functions for greater cost control. Establish and maintain an NDCP approved vendors list for use by its TPA for claim management. This list is inclusive of defense attorneys and other ancillary service providers (e.g., diagnostics, DME, FCM, TCM, Surveillance, subrogation investigations, etc.). Ensure appropriate Certificates of Insurance are on file when that service is not already vetted by the insurance company or the TPA.
Responsible for WC litigation management, collaborating with the CHRO, CFO, NDCP Safety Managers, VP, Finance, insurance broker representative(s), TPA adjuster, and legal counsel regarding WC-related claim litigation and settlements.
Ensure insurance coverage and associated billing in monopolistic states (currently OH only) is maintained and premiums are validated and bills paid in a timely manner.
Collaborate with applicable Company managers and HR partners to promote NDCP Return-to-Work initiatives.
Create and deliver training on NDCP’s workers compensation program / processes and effective management techniques.
Ensure all Company positions are correctly NAICS coded and manage NDCP’s annual WC premium audit.
Complete DART reports and OSHA reporting accurately and promptly.
Review employment terminations of employees on WC-related leave(s) with HR prior to involuntary termination.
Serve as backup to the WC Supervisor and/or Specialists to ensure timely WC administration.
Communicate with injured employees, claims reps, medical clinics, etc., to ensure timely treatment and claim payments.
Approve reserves up to $250,000 and settlements up to $150,000 (lump sum).
Conduct claim review meetings quarterly with senior management for large claims.
Monitor open WC claims in monthly meetings with operational leaders.
Identify injury trends with Safety Managers and communicate findings.
Oversee daily activities of WC team, mentoring staff as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred; High School Diploma required.
At least 10 years of management experience in WC claims, ideally in a multi-state, self-funded environment.
At least 2 years in HR-related WC or benefits roles preferred.
Experience with reserve and settlement authority of $250,000+ and $150,000+ respectively.
Proficiency in Excel, Word, and claims management systems.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Knowledge and Skills
Expertise in WC reserving, settlement negotiation, and regulations.
Proficiency in MS Office and claims/risk management software.
Ability to produce analytical reports and communicate findings effectively.
Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills.
Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive information.
Strong interpersonal and managerial skills.
