History of Hillsboro Christian Church Hillsboro, Missouri (1970-2025)
Hillsboro Christian Church, originally known as First Christian Church of Hillsboro, held its first service in January 1970 at the Masonic Lodge in Hillsboro with 16 attendees. The church was founded by three ladies from the Hillsboro area who desired a Christian church locally. At that time, Christian churches existed in nearby towns such as De Soto and Festus.
Jim Stafford Sr. and Dale Thebeau from De Soto Christian Church, along with Ken Patterson from Fairview Christian Church, collaborated to establish the church. As the congregation grew, they moved to the Goldman Fire House in Goldman, about five miles north of Hillsboro. Between 1971 and 1972, they began constructing a dedicated building at Business 21 and Pearl Drive. After approximately three years, in 1975, additional expansions were made to accommodate the growing congregation.
Throughout its history, the church has had several pastors, including Dale Thebeau (5 years), Richard Neu (2 years), Bob Miller (9 years), and Ken Vogel (27 years). In the early 1990s, the church purchased 13 acres off Highway B outside Hillsboro. The original church building was sold to the Hillsboro School District and used as an administrative building.
During the construction of the new facility, the congregation met at Brown’s Funeral Home in Hillsboro for about a year, then moved into their current location in September 1996. Hillsboro Christian Church celebrated its 50th anniversary in January 2020, with four of the six pastors in attendance.
In 2014, after 27 years, Ken Vogel retired to return to the mission field in Liberia, West Africa. Andy Weaver then became the sixth minister, serving for 11 years.
The church aligns with the Restoration Movement, following the first-century church model of autonomous congregations led by elders. The current elders are Dale Thebeau, Jerry Waggoner, Jim McClung, Jeff Stewart, and Greg Spillman.
