Job Announcement
This position serves as the subject matter expert for the Department's environmental sustainability and zero waste programs. This role is responsible for aligning FMD's efforts with the county's strategic plan, ensuring that our policies and priorities regarding environmental sustainability and zero waste are not only met but exceeded. This position works under the guidance of the Facilities Management Department (FMD) Director.
Key responsibilities:
  • Monitors, measures, tracks, and reports on program outcomes and successes related to environmental sustainability and zero waste.
  • Gathers, prepares, and analyzes data, presenting clear and concise recommendations to department senior management.
  • Develops, plans, and administers training programs focused on environmental sustainability and zero waste for division supervisors to mitigate risks and ensure continuity of goals.
  • Prepares and transforms raw data into formal reporting formats for internal dissemination.
  • Engages department supervisors and employees as the subject matter expert, encourages participation in sustainability efforts through presentations, training, and educational opportunities.
  • Builds and nurtures a collaborative environment to achieve department and county goals for environmental sustainability.
  • Communicates effectively, both in writing and orally, with county departments and internal stakeholders.
  • Takes initiative and ownership for all reporting and presentations, demonstrates a proactive approach to program success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in field related to the assigned functional area; Plus four years of professional work experience with in the functional area.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, public administration, communications, or a related field; a master's degree is a plus.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing, implementing, and tracking sustainability or zero waste initiatives, preferably within a government, institutional, or large organizational setting.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience collecting, validating, and interpreting data related to environmental performance (e.g., KPIs, benchmarks, dashboards).
  • Experience as a lead staff member for a facilities management department responsible for coordination and management of a large and diverse portfolio of commercial building Energy, Environmental, and Sustainability program, practices and projects to provide and validate data, analytics, and reporting, to include managing a large portfolio of associated and impacting commercial buildings.
  • Experience as the lead project manager managing, specifying, reviewing and approving commercial building natural landscape design and construction project for projects at occupied buildings.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, including the ability to craft clear, engaging, and persuasive content for diverse audiences-ranging from senior leadership to field staff.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting, reports, charts, or dashboards that communicate complex data clearly and effectively to executive level staff.
  • Knowledge of applicable environmental regulations, sustainability standards, and zero waste principles in public or institutional facility management contexts.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
  • At least 2 years of experience with audit preparation or compliance documentation related to sustainability or environmental programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent may be required to lift and carry up to 15 lbs. Incumbent must be able to work on electronic equipment such as computer monitors, keyboards, laptop, cellphone, and are essential to the position, including the ability to input, access, and retrieve information. Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, incumbent must be sufficiently mobile to attend meetings, make presentations, or visit sites in which job specific functions are appropriate. Must communicate with others verbally and in writing. Specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception; as well as the ability to effectively work at a computer screen for extended periods of time. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
