Summary

Under the direct administrative supervision of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service Chief, the Physician - General Physiatrist/Amputee Medical Director provides leadership and consultations for the outpatient amputee clinic, TBI clinic, musculoskeletal clinic, and provides direct and comprehensive patient care to the veterans involved in the clinic.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensure may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic standards.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited school.
  • Current unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
  • Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, in an accredited program.
  • Eligible residents may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on a limited basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Meet physical standards for the position, including a pre-placement physical exam.
  • Designated drug testing position with random testing post-appointment.
  • Physical ability to lift 15-44 pounds, push for 2 hours, reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands, walk and stand for 3-5 hours, kneel, and have depth perception, color discrimination, and hearing ability. Use of hearing aids permitted.

Duties

  • Manage and oversee the Amputee PM&R program, ensuring compliance with VA regulations and standards.
  • Lead administrative tasks including setting priorities, delegating, and managing staff performance.
  • Develop and monitor performance measures, promote adherence to standards, and participate in peer reviews.
  • Participate in hiring, policy creation, and interdisciplinary team activities.
  • Lead educational initiatives for staff, patients, and families.
  • Ensure compliance with VHA standards on documentation, workload, and ethical practices.
  • Assist in credentialing and manage licensure and certification tracking.
  • Provide expert physiatry consultation, perform evaluations, and manage complex cases involving amputee rehabilitation, prosthetic, and orthotic needs.
