The post-training team at xAI transforms powerful pre-trained models to become steerable, versatile, and capable of understanding and addressing real-world challenges. The role focuses on creating and driving research and engineering to advance multimodal post-training, especially in vision and language. Responsibilities include creating high quality evaluations that capture real usage patterns of multimodal systems, collecting and curating human and synthetic data to improve system capabilities and behavior, and designing and implementing effective learning methods for multimodal post-training. Ideal candidates have a track record in leading research that improves neural network performance, experience in data-driven experiment designs and systematic analysis for model debugging, and experience with large-scale distributed machine learning systems. The tech stack includes Python, Jax, and Rust. The interview process involves an initial 15-minute intro call followed by four technical interviews including research discussions, coding interviews, and a presentation of past work and vision. The role is based in the Bay Area (San Francisco and Palo Alto), with candidates expected to be located near or open to relocation.
