HVAC Technician Position

General Services Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 250 city government facilities including: City Hall, Public Safety Building (Jail), Norfolk Consolidated Courts Complex, entertainment venues such as the Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall, Attucks Theater, the Virginia Zoo; a cruise terminal, all police and fire stations, recreation centers; pools and numerous city office buildings. The Department of General Services is seeking a qualified candidate for the HVAC Technician position to maintain and repair commercial HVAC systems and operate and maintain automated building control systems. The HVAC Technician will also be responsible for overseeing contractor's work relating to HVAC and automated building control systems. Essential Functions
Essential functions of the HVAC Technician include, but are not limited to: Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs commercial HVAC systems, cooling towers, chillers, boilers, pumps, and motors. Recommends repairing or replacing failed components based on knowledge of HVAC systems and equipment. Oversees the work of contractors on commercial HVAC equipment. Manages, plans, and performs preventative maintenance on commercial HVAC equipment. Obtains estimates for materials and/or services and submits requests for purchase orders by following procurement procedure
Uses work order management application (Facility Dude) to update assigned work orders with notes, labor hours, and materials used. Gains an understanding of the DDC (Direct Digital Control) systems throughout assigned buildings to coordinate adjustments, repairs, or changes with Central Energy Plant. Keeps mechanical spaces clean and clear of clutter/debris in all assigned buildings. Operates and maintains automated building control systems by monitoring system performance, implementing program changes, and coordinating repairs for non-operational portions of the automated control systems. Oversees operations by regulating energy consumption, managing boiler and chiller systems, and performing load shedding functions. Education/Experience
Education/Experience requirements are as follows:
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational nature which may be obtained with a high school diploma or the equivalency. Required: Two years of experience Preferred: Three years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and/or repairing commercial HVAC systems or operating an automated building control system. Additional Information & Requirements
Valid Driver's License required. A DMV transcript dated within 30 days will be required if selected for hire. Work Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday 7am-3:30pm Shift Schedule that rotates every 4 months to include weekends, and some holidays will be required. This position is designated as Essential and will be required to report to work during City closures due to inclement weather and other emergencies.
