Description of Work
This position is open only to current NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services employees-including temporary employees (hired directly or through Temporary Solutions)-and former NCDA&CS employees eligible for RIF priority reemployment under G.S. 126.
The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to all 100 counties in North Carolina.
The Radio Engineer is responsible for operating all types and models of radio equipment with the ability to troubleshoot and repair any and all assigned equipment as needed. This position provides routine installation of new or transferred equipment in buildings or into wheeled or tracked vehicles. Other tasks involve using computers to program mobile and portable radio units, reprogramming units to adjust to Division/District changes in frequency assignment, diagnosing and repairing electrical problems relating to the above-mentioned duties, installing repairs and maintaining other specialized equipment, purchasing and requisitioning of supplies needed to support the repair and maintenance of all assigned equipment. This position will also train new personnel in the use and maintenance of assigned radios as requested/needed.
Travel will be required across the state.
*NCFS is an Emergency Response Division - work schedule may require extended hours and/or possible emergency callback.
Official NC Forest Service uniform and a State-owned vehicle will be provided to support everyday job responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
Necessary special requirement:
Must possess or be able to obtain FCC General Class Radio/Telephone Operator license within 6 months of employment

- Knowledge of various types of radio communication equipment and computer test equipment
- Experience trouble shooting, diagnosing repair problems, and using specialized test equipment and tools associated with radio communications
- Ability to use computers to trouble shoot and program radios and/or pagers
- Ability to perform strenuous tasks such as walking several miles to a tower site and climbing of radio towers using provided PPE, fall protection, and other safety gear
- Ability to train and educate others on the use of radio technology and equipment
